Do you believe that the movie Invictus was historically correct? Because I do and I will prove it to you. I have done research on true events that have occurred and have also watched the movie Invictus. Now I will begin to compare the two, History and Hollywood.
Before we compare the movie Invictus and the actual history, I will tell you the historical background of Nelson Mandela, South Africa, and apartheid. Mandela was born in 1918 and was originally named Rolihlahla, which means troublemaker. During his childhood, the white population increased in South Africa due to the discovery of gold and diamonds. The prison, which Mandela is being held, becomes a university, and with so many educated people there, Mandela is also banned from studying. South Africa gets a new president, F.W. De Klerk, who releases Mandela after serving 27 years in prison, and many other political prisoners. (Brown, Laurel and Hort). Mandela becomes president on May 9th, 1994. (Reference). Mandela then leaves the Presidency in December 1997. ( Britannica) In order to compare the movie Invictus to the real history, one must know what the movie is about. The movie Invictus was directed by Clint Eastwood in 2009. It starred Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon and was produced by Warner Bros (Invictus). The movie starts in February 11, 1990, when Nelson Mandela is freed after being in prison for many years. Shortly after Mandela is released he is elected president of South Africa. Mandela begins to heal the rift between the South Africans by hiring white body guards and keeping the Springbox Rugby team. After watching the film Invictus, I personally enjoyed the movie. One reason is because I think that the actors did really good in portraying their character. Another reason I liked the movie is because it was based and and very accurate to history. The one thing I would’ve possibly changed is instead of having only one airplane fly close to the stadium in the championship game, I would have both airplanes fly close just like they had originally done. So hopefully you can now conclude that the movie Invictus is History and not
