Invinctus, By Nelson Mandela

In the movie Invinctus, Nelson Mandela has just gotten out of prison, on February 11, 1990, after being held for 27 years. In 1994, Mandela has been elected president of South Africa. Mandela wanted to change the country for the better. He wanted to stop the apartheid and bring the divided country together. However, this was not easy for him to do because there are some people who dislike the Afrikaners, the white people, who tortured them. Although he knew how tough it was going to be to unite the divided country together, he still managed to figure out a way to do so, which was through his love for the sport, Rugby. He showed his support to the international rugby team, Springboks, during the South Africa’s 1995 rugby world cup. Mandela joins forces with Francois Pienaar, who is the captain of the Springboks rugby team, to try to achieve his goals of uniting the nations. He asked Francois to do whatever he can to let their team win the world cup. Moreover, since the Springboks will be playing internationally, the outside world will take recognition of South Africa and the need for change and unity of two races. As it was viewed, it was the unity of multiple races. Moreover, it seemed to be the end of centuries worth of conflict between black and white. It also marked the end of the apartheid, which to the out side world and to many in South Africa itself, seems as a horrible law. Another reason would be because the movie is named after the famous poem, “Invictus”. The movie shows us how that poem changed Mandela’s life. How it inspired him to believe in himself, and to not let anything come in his way, no matter what or who it is, to stay strong. It also shows us that that poem is what lead him to what he is now.
