The first property is the atoms that the material is made up of, the second is the way those atoms are arranged, and the third is the way atoms are bonded together. There are for key properties to understand when studying a material. The strength of the material, which is its ability to withstand forces being applied to it without breaking, is the first. The second is the materials elasticity, which is its ability to flex while returning to its original form. The third is the materials plasticity, which is its ability to change its shape permanently. The forth is the materials ductility, which is the materials ability to be deformed. (Study mode, 2013) In the 1950’s semiconductors replaced vacuum tubes in digital computers. Silicon in semiconductors devices demands a greater purity than an afforded by some metallurgical grades of silicon. Silicon wafers used as substrates in the manufacture of discrete electronic devices that include transistors, and also in the development of integrated circuits that are found in computer chips. The reason for silicon is that silicon has a wonderful property of forming a high quality oxide when exposed to oxygen at high temperatures. This oxide forms insulating films and allows many devices to be built together on the same substrate, which leads to dramatically lower cost per device. Other semiconductors lack this property and therefore have never replaced silicon. This is how silicone conductors revolutionized semiconductors in computers and changed society forever.
