King Laios and Jocasta were told by Tiresias not get married because their child would kill Laios and marry Jocasta.
However, they both decided to ignore the warning Tiresias and the oracle had given them and instead decided to get rid of their child. He was found by shepherds on a mountain and taken to Corinth where he was raised by King Polybus and Queen Merope. Oedipus learns from the oracle at Delphi about the prophesy and flees Corinth. On his way to Thebes, Oedipus encounters a traveling caravan. There is some road rage which causes Oedipus to kill King Laios, his father. He then solves the riddle of the sphinx which instantly makes him a hero. He then marries the queen, which he later finds out is his own mother. By getting rid of Oedipus and abandoning him in a mountain, the king and queen doomed themselves and sealed the prophesy. They had a child even though the oracle at Delphi told them what would happen. There was no way around it and the inevitable
happened. Thebes was under a curse which brought plague, disease, and chaos to the city. Oedipus decides to talk to a priest to seek some sort of help. The priest tells Oedipus not to worry because Creon was seeking help from Apollo. Creon tells Oedipus that the only way to break it was to find King Laios' murderer and expel them from the city. He explains how the murder of the King is the cause of the "plague-wind on the city" and how the people should take revenge on this person. Oedipus made it his mission to find this murderer and break the curse. He takes it upon himself to find the murderer which he later finds out that he is the one who killed Laios. Oedipus asks Tiresias for advice but is furious when he hesitates to tell him what he knows. Tiresias then tells him that he is the murder he seeks. Oedipus is enraged and blames Creon and Tiresias of framing him to get to the throne. He realizes his tragic mistake and starts connecting everything that had happened to him since he learned about the prophesy and traveled to Thebes. Oedipus seeking for help from Tiresias was where he started to go into a state of denial when all of the points started connecting, making him the cause of the Theban curse. Oedipus goes to Tiresias for help finding the murderer. Oedipus starts to get upset when Tiresias hesitated to tell him what he knew about the king’s assassin. Oedipus gets so frustrated he accuses Tiresias of being the killer. Tiresias responds to Oedipus by telling him that he is the curse of Thebes. As soon as Tiresias tells him that he is the cause of the curse he gets angry and starts criticizing Tiresias’ powers and mocks his blindness. Tiresias tells him that all of his insults will be turned on him by the entire city. Oedipus then begins to say that Tiresias and Creon are trying to overthrow him and seize the thrown. All the events that happened in this play tried to avoid what the prophecy said would happen if King Laios and Queen Jocasta were to have a child.
