Is Animal Testing Necessary
Anna Shantz
12.1.14
Animal Testing should sometimes be allowed. Animal Testing is justified for reason 1 or reason2,but never reason 3. First, animal testing should be allowed for reason 1 because animal testing has contributed to many lifesaving cures and treatments. The California Biomedical Research Association states that every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals. Second, animal testing should also be allowed for reason 2 because there is no adequate alternative to testing on a living wholebody system. Living systems like human beings and animals are extremely complex. Studying cell cultures in a petri dish, while sometimes useful, does not provide the opportunity to study interrelated process occurring in the central nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system. However, animal testing should never be allowed for reason 3 because reason 3 says animals are different than humans but they actually aren’t because animals have a brain just like us and legs, organs, arms, hands, feet, etc. so it is not poor to test animals with products that we will use cause if it is safe on the animal then it is safe on us. In conclusion, although we should never test animals for reason 3 testing animals for reason 1 and for reason 2 is justified.

One more reason I am against the use of animals for product testing is because of the cost of it. Animal testing generally costs an enormous amount of money, as the animals must be fed, housed, cared for and treated with drugs or a similar experimental substance. On top of that, animal testing may occur more than once and over the course of months, which means that additional costs are acquired. The price of animals themselves must also be factored into the equation. There are companies who breed animals specifically for testing and animals can be purchased through them.…

Approximately, more than 115 million animals worldwide are used in laboratory experiments every year (Humane Society International, 2010). Animals, from the fruit fly to the mouse, are widely used in scientific research. Research is critical for the advancement of medicine, leading to increased chances of survival from diseases and improved strategies to prevent them. Without animal experiments, transplants, diseases, cancer, and vaccines would not have been advanced. The use of animals can be inevitable, particularly in conditions that require first-hand understanding of biochemical processes in and outside the body. Therefore, animals should be used for scientific research.…

Animal testing has its pros and cons but ultimately is unnecessary now. It seems that the only reason it still exists in such popularity is the immoral influence of large corporations. Experiment methods such as selective formulation, human cultures, the physiological chip, cellular tests, and microdosing have made animal testing, a once necessary evil, obsolete. For this, it seems experimenting on animals should at least be limited. Maybe one day it will be completely…
