Hello this is Christine and David on the affirmative team. We think that homework is beneficial and helpful for learning. Today, we will discuss the topic homework and why it is beneficial. School and homework teach students important life lessons that they will use as an adult. For example: It teaches them how to read and comprehend information, communicate ideas with others, listen and take notes, remember things, solve problems, how to develop a plan, set priorities and take action. Homework also teaches students how to concentrate, write reports, spend time alone and helps develop their curiosity about new subjects. Homework builds up an initiative in students. Children can feel responsible for finishing homework. Also, another benefit of homework is time management. They start allotting their time to study and play thus learning to complete their scheduled tasks in the time they have. Moreover, they learn to do things on their own. They manage their time and complete their work independently, and encourages self-discipline in students. Homework helps children learn with interest and by doing homework, children learn to cope up with school activities. It helps children apply their skills and improve on weakness. Most students complete an average of 3.1 hours of homework a night, and 56% of those students state that when it comes to stress, homework is a primary source. Although homework, for many years, has been the way to prepare students for test, ensure accurate comprehension, and (as some say) help develop responsibilities, students and many parents argue that homework is more frustrating than helpful. Why is this? Well, homework can be stressful for a number of reasons. The number one reason being the amount of homework given. Sometimes students are stuck with more homework than needed, and this can be stressful because we don’t get as much time to do the things we enjoy doing at home. Especially if a child is involved in a sport or any extracurricular activities. Yes, education is important, and even though homework gives students more time to practice at home, what is the reason for doing work, after working endlessly all day during school? We work as much as adults with full time jobs! Will we ever get a break? I feel that when students go home, they should be able to relax and relieve their minds of schoolwork until the next morning. Homework is a headache, homework is time consuming, and homework is unnecessary.…

Also, when we forget our homework, we get in trouble which is extremely unfair, as we are only human and we forget things or get distracted from tasks.…

According to Etta Kralovec and John Buell homework should be abolished. After examining homework in the lives of students, families, and communities, Kralovec and Buell found that homework disrupts family life, interferes with what parents want to teach their children, and punishes poor students. Kralovec & Buell (2000). Homework restricts family life by limiting the time that parents could be teaching their children their heritage, religious beliefs, and many life skills. Arguing is happening more often over homework and students that do not have the means can’t get their homework done thus causing more stress for the family. Kralovec & Buell (2000). Kohn(2007) states there is three facts about homework:…

Homework has been around for a very long time. It is set and traced as a tradition of having teachers assigning work and students completing it. Most people and students believe that it is necessary for teachers, tutors, and professors to give out homework. Teachers should give out homework because it helps the students better understand the subject that they are studying. When a teacher gives out homework and looks over it, the teacher can observe the student's advantages and disadvantages. Because of this, teachers can help students if they have disadvantages in a certain area, so that the students can improve their study skills and teach themselves that learning can take place anywhere, not just in school buildings. In addition, students can be able to express positive attitudes towards the value of school stress and also foster independence and responsibility when they are completing their homework. Despite all the benefits for students to have homework, conversely I believe that assigning homework is actually harmful to the students because it causes students’ stress and exhaustion, lack of time for other activities, and possible loss of interest in learning.…

Homework does not have academic benefits for students. First off, homework is busy work and doesn't reflect class work. Kohn states in “Truth”, students who do not understand what's going on in class homework can make them feel stupid and they can get accustomed to doing the subject wrong. While on the other hand, other students could understand what they are doing and the practice is just a waste of time. The information shown proves homework does not have benefits for either spectrum of the students. Either homework makes the student feel stupid or is just pointless practice. In addition, Rhodes and Wilson state that Pasi reports students might not complete homework that they feel are routine and boring. Repetitive worksheets and handouts…

In support of the view of homework as helpful, many educators stress that specifically aligning homework to the learning task is part of the strategy for building understanding. The website Focus on Effectiveness cites several studies showing that in elementary school, homework helps build learning and study habits (Cooper, 1989; Cooper, Lindsay, Nye, & Greathouse, 1998; Gorges & Elliot, 1999). Also noted is the point that 30 minutes of daily homework in high school can increase a student’s GPA up to half a point (Keith 1992). Many students need time and experience to develop the study habits that support learning, and homework can provide that as well as the ability to cope with mistakes and difficulty (Bempechat, 2004). Those teachers who take the time to add instructive comments to their feedback to homework get the greatest return on their efforts in after-school work. (Walberg, 1999).…
