A political party is a Political organization that typically seeks to influence government policy, usually by nominating their own candidates and trying to seat them in political office. Parties participate in electoral campaigns, educational outreach or protest actions. Parties often espouse an expressed ideology or vision bolstered by a written platform with specific goals, forming a coalition among disparate interests. Different scholars have staged different definitions of the ideal meaning of a political party, among them being Gilchrist’s definition which argues that a political party is an organized group of citizens who profess to share the same political views and who by acting as a political unit, try to control the government.
President George Washington launched the Americans people democratic association, a party like organization which formed the basis of partism. It came at a time when Americans yearned for a political regime that could address their grievances considering they were refugees on the run fleeing from oppression in Europe. That historical event acted as a stepping stone to other political veterans hence forming the basis of democracy that spread far beyond American borders to the rest of the world. Political parties vary from state to state depending on their manifestos as well as holding at heart, the interests of their respective nations is concerned.
The major political parties commonly recited in peoples lips include; South Africa’s ANC (African National Congress) party that hoisted President Nelson Mandela’s dream of a universe devoid of blemish and propaganda that divides people along racist ethnic and tribal lines, Kenya’s KANU (Kenya African National Unity) Party that helped form the 1st ruling party in Kenya had its fair share of criticism and praise with regard to how the three arms of the government performed economically if its state of affairs compared evenly among its counterparts.
