Is It Good to Live in a Small Community?
In the past, most people lived in small villages where everyone knew everyone else. Nowadays, most people live in large cities where they only know a few people in their area.

What do you think were the advantages and disadvantages of living in a small community?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Since the world is becoming increasingly urbanized, most people nowadays live in large cities where they hardly know who is living next to them. Some people wish that they could live in a small community as in the past. However, was it really good to live in small villages where everyone knew everyone else? Let’s explore the advantages and disadvantages of living in a small community.

When it comes to the advantages, the most obvious fact was that people living in a small village could experience the sense of community. As the number of residents in the area was not large, people knew each other very well and felt that they were part of the social group. Hence, they were responsible for the area and willing to work together to improve it. Also, in a small community, there was a strong bond among people, which protected them from crimes. Since everyone knew each other, cared about each other and always kept an eye on each other’s house, it was very difficult for strangers to go into the area and commit crimes. As a result, people didn’t have to be watchful against so many things around them as people nowadays do.

Apart from the above advantages, living in a small community also involved some disadvantages. The first drawback is the limited opportunities for study and work. People in small villages used to do the job that had been handed down from generation to generation. They rarely thought about building a new career for which they really had passion. Because they
