Some own diesel trucks for their fuel efficiency, and ability to transport heavy cargo and tow heavy things, others own them because they’re big, loud, can roll coal, and make them look more manly. If you want to trace it back to an origin though, rolling coal started at truck pulls at county fairs in towns like Columbia City and Kendallville. A truck pull is when two diesel trucks go head to head and see which one can pull a weighted sled the farthest. Guys would come to these truck pulls and think to themselves “Wow! This is so cool and manly I wanna do this with my own truck!”, they then went out and spent anywhere up to $5000 on tuners and smoke switches so they too could embrace the childish joy received from rolling coal. Recently though, rolling coal has seemingly blown up out of nowhere because of a few reasons. One, social media has made it so easy now to share videos of rolling coal to the world. Two, a new term for rolling coal has come around that really has a lot of environmentalists in a fuss. YouTube videos have started becoming more and more popular showcasing coal rollers using the black smoke as “Prius repellant”, producing so much black smoke on the roads that any cars really, but specifically Prius’ have to slow down because they can’t see, therefore being repelled. According to a guy that actually sells stack kits up in Wisconsin, putting even one stack on a truck and rolling coal is a symbolic middle finger to the Obama Administration. The basic premises behind this is that a lot of people don’t like Obama at all nowadays, so they figure that since he is for protecting the environment, they ought not to be, and what better way to show that they are against Obama’s environmental policies by spewing black diesel smoke into the air
