The main thesis of the book is honor and how it relates to every part of the southern way of life and culture. This book describes the ways honor is used to further prejudices and keep the ways of life in tact, even through the progressing society around them. He describes honor as an all‐encompassing element of life and thought in the South. Honor was immortal and derived its value from the opinions of others through a complex but well‐understood, and apparently, well‐adhered social hierarchy. Wyatt-Brown builds a convincing case that honor provides structure and implicit discipline for an ordered and hierarchical society. The details of this southern society of honor are revealed through dualistic and conflicting expressions of gentility, the absolute order of the family, and an extensive discussion on sexual honor. Gentility was sought as a measure of worth derived from a requirement to be sociable, well educated, and moral.…

The legend of Robin Hood has been around for nearly one thousand years. For the past several hundred years, Robin and his Merry Men have been known for stealing from the rich, particularly tax collectors, and giving to the poor; however, because this is still stealing and Robin had also killed at least one of the king’s deer, Robin and his men were known as outlaws. While they may have been outlaws, Robin Hood and his Merry Men were more like knights in the way that they dealt honorably with opponents in battle, defended the weak and helpless, and protected women and children.…

What characteristic would be connected with the term “Lord Protector”? One would tend to agree it’s the use of their power for the country’s interests. But what about Charles I? He ruled without the Parliament for 11 years. He lacked the common touch, he caused a rebellion in his own country. In the other hand Oliver Cromwell who was the leader of the new model army, fought to make sure that Parliament had a fair share of the interest of the country. Thus, I believe that Oliver Cromwell is deserving of the term “Lord Protector” because of his actions of the greater good, and how his modest character and religious views shaped the country for the better.…

Other people can learn many things from my person of honor. Some of the things that can learn are to work for your money and not take other people’s money like it was your own. You could learn this off of my grandpa Lloyd because he was a hard worker until he was 70 years old and he never asked for anything from anybody, even if times were tough. Another thing other people can learn from my grandpa was that if you work hard it will pay off. You could learn this from my grandpa because he worked 7 days a week for a long time and had everything paid off so he was never in debt. I have learned many things from my grandpa. Some of the things are not being serious all the time, and always have fun. This was important to me it makes me who I am today. This was important to me because I do exactly what he says now and he was my hero. This is why I chose my grandpa as my honorable person.…

Honor is commonly associated with people in places of high worthiness and respect, in Henry IV – Part 1 we aren’t given a set definition of what they view honor to be. Instead, honor has different meanings to different characters in the play. Shakespeare portrays his views on honor through the characters of Hotspur, Falstaff, and Hal. Since these characters have such contrasting views on honor it creates conflict for them with other individuals because they aren’t able to see eye to eye on their opposing actions.…

There are many concepts, that Americans are exposed to- and even use- in their regular day to day lives, that are not very clearly defined. Maybe these concepts are too confusing. Or too broad to clearly understand. Or they’re just vague. Or, perhaps, maybe these concepts simply are not valued enough within that American “go-go-go” mindset to have time taken to really think about and understand what they mean. One of these cheapened, romanticized concepts, is honor. Honor always has, and always will, exist in some way or form in every single society, including America, however morphed and faded it might be.…

Honor to different people can mean completely different things, so it’s almost impossible to come up with one solid definition of what honor is. To some people being a brave soldier and dying for your country is honorable. For others, it’s being a missionary in a poor African country. While the deeds that are considered honorable may be different, I think it all goes back to my point of being an individual and doing what you think is right. Those missionaries don’t go to Africa for a vacation. They go there to bring the word of God. Those soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen aren’t out there dying for no reason, they are risking their lives to ensure America stays free. While those instances maybe different, they have one thing in common, and that is that in both instances the actions are done because of some moral conviction to do what is right. These people are few and far between these days, and it’s really a breath of fresh air to see people with some kind of morality these days.…
