Ishtar Gate Research Paper
In 1897 Robert Koldewey began the excavations at Babylon, where the Ishtar Gate was discovered. The Ishtar gate was only excavated at the beginning of 1902 and its excavations only finished in 1914. Currently, the first layer of the Ishtar Gate is located in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, while its remaining layers still at the Babylon site.
The Ishtar gate was made from mud bricks as well as the rest of Babylon, but differently, from the rest of Babylon, it was covered in “blue enameled tiles which were thought to be of Lapis lazuli while the beasts were furnished in yellow and brown tiles. The gates measured more than 38 feet (11.5 m) high with a vast antechamber on the southern side.” (Garcia 3)
