”It’s only me” is an article written on March the 19th 2001 by Nancy Gibbs, and was published in the ”TIME” magazine. The article touches mainly the themes school shootings and bullying. School shootings are getting more and more common in the American society. In the article “It’s only me” we hear about different peoples responses to the school shooting committed in 2001 by Charles Andrew Williams, also known as, Andy Williams, as well as the authors view on this matter. One of the reasons Nancy Gibbs wrote this article is to show that the school shootings are not linked together. They have been caused by different things and are committed because of a variety of reasons.
In the beginning of her article she starts by telling us how the schools have become much safer, because of the fact that many parents just float their children off to school in a bubble, grateful to live in a wholesome town. That people forget about the bad things that can happen. Gibbs tells us that there are a lot of children that still carry guns to school, and gives us an example of an eleven-year-old boy who was arrested for threatening to kill two other students, and the boy claim to have gotten the idea from the media, but he had no intentions of actually using the gun.
Nancy Gibbs’ purpose with this article is to get people to understand how vulnerable children are, and that parents should be present for their child. Gibbs also wants people to focus on the fact that bullying can have some very bad consequences if nobody does anything. And she wishes of course also to create a debate about this subject, because as I have said, this is an uprising problem in the American society.
The one thing that nearly every school shooting has in common is the chorus of parents declaring that “I never thought it could happen here.” That’s not because they know the statistics – that youth violence is dropping, that schools are getting safer, that fewer than 1% of teen
