3:15 am, I lie in the spot of my bed I’d always gone to for comfort, now lying there unable to move, think, breathe, sleep, trying to wrap my mind around the fact that my world would never be the same again. Randomly waking up in the early hours of the morning is something I rarely do, so waking up at 3:06 am looking around my room, seeing Kierra also happen to wake up wasn’t right. Looking over at my phone, seeing Mrs. Jennie was calling me, I hesitantly answered, unsure of what to expect. Still half asleep, I asked, “Hello?”. Is everything okay?”…
When I arrived home it was dark, and I went to bed. In the morning I called Aunt Claudia. She didn’t answer. I called again around noon. She didn’t answer and after lunch I drove to see her.…
The scene was one of cosy domesticity, a man and a woman sharing breakfast after a night out clubbing together. Married? Lovers? Boyfriend and girlfriend, or just a platonic relationship, it could have been any of the three, and the scene would have been mirrored in many homes across Rome. They were normal. Or at least, together, they contained a semblance of normality, which to Kyle, was almost as eerie a sensation as was the morning after his first murder to know that the woman across from him, the one who’d have reason to never trust another man, or allow one to touch her ever again, had entrusted him to hold her in his arms as she slept. And held no regrets for having done so, and not just that. She’d also revealed details to him of her life experiences that she doubted to spoken of with such earnestness and honesty to anyone before him, and he’d returned the favour without a second thought. With her eyes closed, and her soft breathing, and the faintest of snores, but no drooling, she’d appeared so serene and peaceful, and the Army veteran hoped that he’d been in same way responsible for the lack of nightmares.…
“Back again it looks like I’m gonna be here all night. Looks like a long night.” I say to my dog Alexie. But it is going to be worse than that. I picked up the phone and ordered a pizza. “Yes I’ll like a meat lovers pizza with pineapple on it” I say. When the pizza came I took a bite and……
Geographically, Italy is comprised of a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea, as well as two large islands. The shape of Italy has been depicted as a ‘boot’ in many cartoons and drawings for years. The country covers over 116,000 square miles, making it approximately the combined size of Florida and Georgia. (Killinger, 2002) Italy is a democratic republic that has a current population of around 60 million people, making it the twenty-third most populous country in the world. Italy is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the ‘Group of Six’, which later became the G8, and the European Union. ("Italy," 2010) Italians are primarily Roman Catholic and are required to have fourteen years of formal education. This has lead to a 98 percent literacy rate among the population that only has a growth rate of 0.02 percent per year, which is one of the lowest growth rates in the world. (Killinger, 2002)…
Life in Italy in the 1930’s caused difficulty to some Italians during that time period. During the 1930’s a large number of Italians who had opposed the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini arrived in the United States. After the news spread in Italy about the bombing of Pearl Harbour almost all Italians supported the war against Benito Mussolini. At this point, Italy was slowly becoming under the Nazi rule, the significance of a woman’s role in Italy was emphasised as they were expected to accept the fascist ideology. Girls were expected to get married and conceive lots of children. Many young women in Italy felt the pressures of politics that were dominated by men and felt that women’s rights were disappearing as they were expected to carry out these tasks. Before the 1930’s, Mussolini launched his battle of births in 1927 which was a campaign that encouraged the people of Italy to increase their family sizes.…
Crystal also says she will come to visit during the summer. Alice went to Folk to see her family. Jasper was helping Paul with the new client. Paul came home. Aro and Paul went outside to talk. I know that Aro was trying to talk Paul into moving to Italy. My brother does not give up. Once he gets an idea in his head does not forget or let it go. Aro has been that way ever since he was a child. He always wanted to be in control. Crystal says. I know I have been marrying to him forever. I say. Paul and Aro finally came in. What were you guys talking about? Do not worry I was not trying to talk Paul into moving to Italy. I was asking about buying a house here in Boston. Are we moving to Boston? I ask. No, the house is just a vacation house when…
It was a relaxing day at home in the Helfman household. My mom was constantly jabbering on the phone, my dad’s eyes were glued to his computer working, and my brother was stuck to his bed and never got up. My brother, Danny had gotten into Syracuse University a few months earlier and he was ecstatic about the life he was going to make for himself. Danny and I got along well our whole lives, but we weren’t as close as some other siblings. This upset me because sometimes all I wanted to do was talk to my brother and get his advice. I have three dogs. My dogs Sadie, Tootsie, and Lucky are cuddly and soft toy poodles.…
Today was a ruff day for me and Elizia! Before I met up with her I had to take care of Elly. I felt as tired as a marathon runner. These days were hard because the fever was still going on and there was no food left. But the worse thing was that I couldn’t find mama. It killed me inside to think that she was dead. Anyways Elizia and I had been taking care of a lot of people lately. It was insane to see how many people were affected by this disease. This fever was an intruder coming into the city! Though when Eliza and I were taking caring of people we stumbled upon 2 twin boys that seemed like they needed most of the care. So we took them with us and bring them back to the old coffee shop. Elizia and I had to recover the shop, from when we fled it because…
For this week’s discussion post I chose to read Edith Wharton's "Roman Fever”. The story takes place in Rome, specifically at a restaurant overlooking the Palatine (one of the seven hills on which the oldest part of Rome was built) where two middle aged American women Mrs. Ansley (a well-cared for and still stunningly attractive woman), and Mrs. Slade (a high colored fairly attractive woman) overhear two younger women on the street below carrying on about how they were going out to have fun with friends for the night instead of spending the evening with their much less exciting mothers. As we continue to read we learn the two women have been lifelong friends and just happened to have run into one another while vacationing in Rome and that the…
In recent years, ethnic minority writing has played a major Pole in shedding light on the complexity of the Canadian identity. Italian-Canadians figure among the numerous communities active on the Canadian literary scene. In the last decade in particular the Italian-Canadian literary corpus, which traces its development alongside the growing Italian-Canadian community, has seen numerous publications, especially novels.…
I could believe how much Aro has changed but I think he only changing so I can move back to Italy. I want to trust Aro but I love it here Boston. My children are happy. Paul loves his new job. Sulpice told me James allows her and David to have visiting rights with Anastasia and Andrew. I do not trust James. I told Sulpica how I feel. I also told to be careful because it could be a trap.…
It all began with a simple phone call one chilly, rainy Monday night after dinner. “Joe,” my mother hollered up the stairs, “it is Jackie.” As I came downstairs to pick up the phone, I was quite excited. Although I tired, I was looking forward to spending some time with Jackie, my long time friend. As I skipped steps running down the stairs I thought of all the things we would do tonight, bowling, go out to eat, watch a movie, so many things to choose from. But tonight was Jackie’s turn to decide what to do as I got to choose last time we hung out.…
“This is one of the best days ever.” She nods in agreement. As I doze off into a heavy sleep. I wake up and see that we have an hour to get to the airport or we are going to miss our flight home. I wake up abby and we start to put our stuff away and get ready. Once we are done we sprint out to our Uber. After that we sit in our Uber waiting to get to the air port. We finally got to the airport and didn't miss our flight. After the plane ride we walk through the airport and talk. “I had so much fun!” Abby says. “Me too!” I answer. “Bye!I will see you later?” Abby asks. “Ya! I will see you later” I say as me and Abby hug. Once I got home I look at all the pictures we took and notice that this trip made our friendship grow…
It was the summer in 2006, it was hot and the air was dry, my two children and I had just finished moving to our new apartment in Ventana Ranch we were all exhausted and relieved to be finished. Moving wasn’t something they had ever did before we had lived in Bernalillo their entire little lives, but I was ready for change, a new beginning, I wanted to get out of the town I grew up in and I had finally done that. My daughter, Niya was five years old, my son, Santiago was ten. They were excited they didn’t have to share a room any longer this apartment was bigger than what we had before. School had just finished for Santiago and it was summer break. He wasn’t too happy about leaving his friends behind, neither was Niya. This was her first year in Kindergarten and Santiago’s 5th grade year, we had a talk about making new friends and how much fun it could be, but I knew it wouldn’t be easy.…
