Doublespeak
No one can be trusted: people in Government, lawyers, doctors, or teachers. They all use language that is deceiving, confusing, and complex. With the use of doublespeak in action, no one can be trusted. Doublespeak isn’t performed out of arbitrary. Critical thought goes into this. The reason why Americans are ignorant to what is happening in their world isn’t because they aren’t informed. It’s deeper than that. Americans are being tricked through the use of special vocabulary to mislead one. The ones we call “experts,” that we are supposed to depend on for factual information are all liars. In “A world of Doublespeak,” William Lutz stresses to the reader that doublespeak is dangerous in many ways. The author claims that the dangers of such language are that people won’t be aware of government activities; it creates liars and deceivers, and it also destroys the function of language. The author uses his expert opinion along with factual information, and examples that ultimately prove this to be a successful piece of work. One of the ways this essay succeeds is through factual information. Lutz supports his claim that doublespeak exist through quotes of people we know. He targets Mr. Greenspan, who is now Federal Reserve Chair. Mr. Greenspan stated “I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you’ve probably misunderstood what I’ve said. (340)” One can say that this is clearly an act of doublespeak. Immediately after stating this quote, the author states that “Greens doublespeak doesn’t seem to have held back his career. (340)” The author is trying to say that people don’t notice doublespeak and that is why political figures are able to hold there positions. They are tricking us right before our eyes and we don’t even notice it. There are people like Green all over our world. The author states that we here doublespeak everyday but don’t protest or stop it
