James Bond Stockdale's Ideal Of True Education
True Education

James Bond Stockdale's ideal of true education simply put is an education that is well rounded with lessons that will help a person not only when things are going well, but also when times are tough. Anyone can steer the ship when the water is calm, but it takes a true captain to take the helm through a storm. True education encompasses modern lessons as well as an understanding of the antiquity. Coming from Stockdale, a political prisoner, this statement is not easily overlooked. Stockdale used true education to help him survive four years in solitary confinement. Personally, I agree with Mr. Stockdale the way he uses his education in In War, In Prison, In Antiquity. That being said I am growing up in an age where classical education is losing its importance in many facets of American life. Before recently education was about furthering one's knowledge to become enlightened, today capitalism and a wealth of knowledge has forced education to become specialized for the individual to become a successful in his business endeavors, often leaving classical education behind. Past ages had teachers and professors that taught a general spectrum of curriculum such as history or math, now these teachers and professors have been forced to specialize. Other professions, too many to name, are applicable to

At this point true education will make a comeback in a strong way. We as a people will look for strong leaders and only those with a true education will be qualified. Stockdale's knowledge of what happened to Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, assisted him in the situation he was in. Education is a tool that is there to serve us as we need it. True education serves us in more stressful times because we can use the classical aspect to learn from our predecessor's mistakes or

During the 15th to 17th centuries, Renaissance Europe faced an enormous change in the way education was seen and valued. Initially people thought that education was meant for philosophy and critical thinking, but overtime it lost its value and goals. Education ended up being seen as entertainment since students were unable to successfully apply their thinking skills. As education lost its importance Europeans wanted more people in the workforce than philosophers because of the growing industries.…

The discussion of education in America is one of the most important topics that our nation faces today. America’s economic future and ability to compete with the rest of the world depends on having a highly educated populace and well trained workforce. Our education system has had its problems but I feel that over time with the right elected officials, we can turn around and rank in the top ten to compete globally.…

One apparent purpose of a Renaissance education was to praise the value of useful education, through the teaching of the classics, mainly Greek literature that was written by Greek philosophers, mathematicians and other important figures. Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini, stated on his book, On the Education of Free Men, 1450, that the study of the Philosophy and of Letters was the guide to the meaning of the past, present, and even future. There may be some bias to this statement, for Piccolomini was an Italian humanist who later became pope, and may have been using his knowledge of the classics, being a humanist, to justify his religious and political power. Battista Guarino, an Italian humanist educator, also supports the classics, by simply explaining that mankind must learn and train in Virtue, or as the ancients called the “Humanities.” There is also a bit of point of view, however, because being an Italian humanist educator, Guarino would value the teaching of the classics to his students and would want to influence…

In this paper we will discuss the White House issue on education Reform for the Future. Education has been seen by many including the president as the key to a stronger economy. Better education, will enable the workforce to be more adaptable, creative and well equipped to be a competitive force in the economy (Education of a President 2009). In the United States this system really starts with a student when he or she first enters the classroom and opens up a textbook. The success of this reform will be measured on the basis of how many high school students graduate being academically prepared for college or skilled enough in a trade to make a productive living in society.…

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” Martin Luther King, Jr. During the Great Depression, not everyone was given a decent education, and it most certainly was not the number one priority. You were pretty much fine if you were in a rich white family, but the further down the caste system you were, you harder it was. In Maycomb, the Finches, the Cunninghams, and the Ewells all have a different view of their education, inside and outside of the schoolhouse.…

Now, this does not necessarily mean enabling the student to become rich and powerful. Some, who are both, do not live well and some, who are neither, live rather well. It is about fulfillment, which comes from purpose. That is the impetus driving my passion for teaching. I want the students under my tutelage to not only assimilate knowledge but to obtain it in order that they might use it to fill a void in the world. Alexander left the world a much better place than he found it having filled it with ideals the Western world still extols today. Or did he? Perhaps it was not so much the mighty Alexander as it was the teacher who groomed him. After all, Alexander admits that his father who left him the crown did not imbue him with so great a gift as his teacher who molded his character. I wonder if most teachers realize the power of the scepter placed in their hands in the form of a black board pointer. Not only to impart information but to prepare students to make a tremendous difference in the world with the information we impart; to create Alexanders -- that’s the benevolent power with which we have been endowed.…

The subject Aldous Huxley has chosen to write about is a world in which everything is “perfect” a world in which everyone feels fulfilled through false mechanics. Emotions of fear and anger are no longer stimulated through dangerous encounters with the outside world. Humans are treated through V.P.S (Violent Passion Surrogate) to feel these emotions with no harm being done to there bodies. This still gives them the adrenaline rush that they need monthly, allowing them to feel “alive”. The world Huxley creates tells us that the only way a perfect society can exist is to no longer allow humans to believe in supernatural forces such as God and jesus and to take away the fear of dying and getting old. Thus allowing humans no need for God.…

The theory of practice of teaching and interpreting knowledge, also known as education, is generally percepted in society to be the surest path to achieving success in one's lifetime. Over the centuries, the system of learning has changed jurastically and has presented itself in a number of different ways to a variety of cultures and civilizations. The earliest forms of education date back to pre-history, which is what we refer to as the time before the written word. In that spectrum, teaching and learning was carried out only through sounds and body language; a lot like the interactions we see amongst animals today. We all know that education is of great value, and that's why in recent generations the major problems that have arised have all dealt with who gets to be educated and at what price. Those problems have been resolved and for quite some time now, a free public education has been available in the United States. The new problems are the questions like, "Is it losing quality? , Does the criteria need to be updated?" and "Is it worth the price?" The quality of a public education and the price of post secondary schooling are two issues that our country faces in today's world. If we can solve or so much as improve these conflicts then more people will take their free education for what it's worth and hopefully not have to pay as much for their college degree. Other factors that come into play when measuring how successful you will be in life are, believe it or not, demorgraphics. Your sex, race, and where your from can play a role in how much money you will make in life. These are topics that regularly appear in the modern day debate of education and they are also some of the issues that I will be covering in my paper. I will be thoroughly analyzing education and assessing my own opinions about it.…

I believe that greatness is within all of us; we just need a little help finding it sometimes. I have come to understand that one caring person can make all the difference in someone else’s life. As I venture further into my teaching career, I hope to help my students to Education is a journey of seeking answers and experiencing. Every human being has the ability to learn and apply meaning to education. Learners should not be encouraged to surrender to the ideals and beliefs of a set curriculum. Rather than settling for the minimum learning requirements written out based on the expectations of the state, students should encounter knowledge, build a solid structured foundation, and then branch out to master the skills and ideas that they wish to develop and pursue. Learning then becomes a map of the sea. Students may be influenced by the way the wind blows and the tossing of the waves, but they have the knowledge and ability to adjust their sails to follow the path of the desired horizon. As educators we should not be neutral in our teaching, but radical and dynamic so that our students can learn beyond what is normal, static, and unchanging. I believe that the historical foundations of knowledge and the truths revealed by the past are vital to the knowledge of the future, but I also believe that we are agents of change and that we should teach our students to not only build upon and consecrate the truths of our past, but to challenge them and use them to think critically and make new history.…

Today, education enables us to enlarge our knowledge and open doors for opportunities to the path of having a good future. In the five readings, each written by a different author, there was a lesson learned and something to take away from each one. Reading through the passages by Mann, Moore, Malcolm X, Gatto, Rose, and Anyon, each author contributed his or her point of view on general public education. This topic can be very argumentative depending on the quality of education people receive. Education today is the single most important mean for individuals to achieve their personal goals in the workforce.…
