Explain the role of a teacher in education and training.
1.1
In teaching, one of the main roles is to motivate your learners to develop their ability and aspiration to learn. A teacher’s role is often perceived as just delivering training, but in reality it is much more than that. The role is not just about teaching, the focus of the role relates very much to inspiring your learners to change and develop their personal, social and professional skills to the best of their ability. The primary role of a teacher though is to teach in their specialist area, this involves planning lessons, finding and preparing materials, undertaking research, assessing learners. Teachers must also keep records of lesson plans, attendance and assessments. Other roles that teachers may need to consider may include mentor, administrator, motivator and organiser.

A teacher has many responsibilities. Firstly a teacher needs to keep themselves up to date in both teaching and their field of expertise as the course requirements may change, also legislation may be changed depending on the field in which they teach. For example first aid trainers need to be aware of the ever changing rules, regulations, guidelines to be able to effectively teach their subject, more so when they are offering courses which are required by law (for example some companies are required by law to have some staff trained in first aid at work therefore it is essential that these courses are run in line with current rules and regulations) .Maintaining high standards in their work and conduct and also maintaining a professional image at all times. They must also Comply with the rules of the organisation which they are part of, as well as legislation, codes of practice, rules and regulations set by the awarding body that they represent to ensure that the course is taught the way they wish it to be. Finally they are responsible for ensuring that all the relevant bits of legislation, codes of practice and regulatory requirements which are covered in the next question are being followed at all times.

Data protection act (1998) – This act regulates the use of personal information that is either held on paper or electronically. In summary the act means that all data held must not be excessive and be fit for purpose, kept securely and destroyed when there is no longer a need for that information. The information must never be passed on to other organisations without consent of the individual. All organisations which hold data must comply with this act.
Equality Act (2010) – This act brings together different aspects of discrimination under one piece of legislation. It is the teachers’ responsibility to challenge any anti-social behaviour such as offensive language, bullying and discrimination on the grounds of age, religion, race, gender, disability amongst others and to promote an atmosphere of friendliness, tolerance and respect.
Copyright, designs and patents act (1988) - This act states that if anyone adapts, distributes or copies any published work then they must seek permission before using it. Teachers must adhere to this act when using materials for teaching, either by the use of handouts or presentations.
Children Act (2004) – This act promotes the safety and the well-being of children up to 19 or possibly older if they have been assessed as vulnerable. This act basically requires teachers to provide a safe learning environment for learners, also if a teacher suspects that any of their learners are at risk then they need to report this to the their line manager or equivalent and document any incidents.
Health and safety at work Act (1974) (HASAWA) - This Act requires teachers to provide a safe and healthy environment for themselves and their learners. This requires teachers to undertake risk assessments before running the course and also carrying out active risk assessments throughout the course and remove or reduce risks where appropriate. This also covers knowing where the fire exits are located and the evacuation procedures should the fire alarm sound. Teachers should also be aware of how to report any incidents especially if they teach in different establishments as they may have different reporting procedures.

Promoting equality and diversity in education is essential for both teachers and students. The aim is to create a classroom environment where all students can thrive together and understand that individual characteristics make people unique and not ‘different’ in a negative way. Equality means treating all learners the same this can be done by the teacher treating all learners fairly and with respect. Diversity means that the teacher needs to value the differences that individuals bring to the group, as each group of learners is going to be different. A teacher should make sure that everyone feels that they belong and that their views and opinions matter regardless of their race, gender, age, disability, religion or sexual orientation.

It is important that you identify the needs of your learners so you can design the course to reflect individual differences. Learners individual needs can vary; some learners may not have any whereas some learners may have specific needs that will need to be taken into consideration. First thing that comes to mind is ‘is the learner a wheelchair user or have any disability that may need to be considered for example deaf/ blind?’ as this will need the teacher to think ‘is the classroom accessible to these learners? Is there anything I can do to accommodate them?’ moving on the teacher needs to find out if any learners have any difficulties that may need to be considered, for example are they dyslexic? Are they hard of hearing? Do they have any other difficulties such as dyspraxia, dyscalculia or dysgraphia? When the teacher has taken all the learners needs into consideration only then will they are able to deliver a session where all the learners’ needs are met.

Firstly it is important to set out some common ground rules, some of these can be negotiable (break times) and non-negotiable (no smoking). Examples of rules that can be set are; respect for others, follow health and safety procedures, engage with others, respect others, be punctual and be equipped for class. If these rules are followed then they will help create and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment. But in order for these to work the teacher must also abide by them and sets an example to the learners.

3.1
Teachers remarks
Teaching roles involve working with various other professionals, these could be internal such as fellow teachers, line managers, administrators, technicians and finance staff. Alongside these you will also have to work with external professionals who are people who work outside the teachers organisation these may be parents, assessors, child line, awarding organisations etc. it is also important for teachers to be able to realise when there learners will benefit from other professional help.

3.2
Teachers remarks
Teachers need to be aware that there are professional boundaries, and that it is important that these boundaries are not crossed. It is possible for newly qualifies or inexperienced trainers can sometimes be tempted to step over one of these boundaries to help a learner, but sometimes this can cause more harm than good. There is a golden rule that you should let each profession do their job and to be aware of the internal and external support available to learners so that teachers are able to direct learners in the right direction.

Points of referral are where teachers are required to refer a learner to a more suitable professional. For example if a learner has a concern about their health then the teacher should refer them to their GP or other health care professional. Other examples may be that learners have problems with debt, drugs, alcohol or childcare. Again these learners should be refered to the relevant professional whether internal or external.
