Influences on the story: The Maze Runner A lot of Dasher inspiration for writing came from books, TV shows and movies, he says whenever he has a writing block he pops in a movie or watch TV to get the mental writing juices going, and from that he creates a fantasy land/science fiction story from both children, teen and adults.
In 2005 when finishing his last book in “The Jimmy Fincher Saga” Dasher was told to start working on another book. So in November 2005 before going to bed an idea came to Dasher mind, of boy stuck in any unsolved maze, and to thus The Maze Runner was born. Dasher says his inspiration came from these 5 thing “Lord of the Flies” Dasher says he read this book in high school and absolutely loved it, it is defiantly one of the biggest inspirations for the book, kid being isolated in the glades fighting themselves and each other, trying to figure out a way out. Next “Enders Game” also reading this book in high school too was a definitely the inspiration for the character Tomas and having the kids growing up so fast. Other influence were the show “Lost” because not only is it one of Dashner favorite shows but also because he loves the story telling of the show and it heavily influenced his writing style. And the last two influences the book: the Maze Runner” was the book “The Shinning” and of course the idea of a corn maze. All these factor and inspiration have brought this book to life, and is now one of New York Times beset selling book, and also has now been made into two major motion films, with
the start lead role of Tomas played by the actor Dylan O’ Brien, this book is a worldwide hit and would not have been possible if it were not for the thing that inspired it to happen.
