James F. Melton Scholarship Application Essay
Why Do I Deserve this Scholarship?

Why do I deserve this scholarship? That is a sizable question, one that at first appears easy to answer, but slowly turns into a question that could leave you doubting yourself. When I first decided to apply for this scholarship, I thought to myself “No big deal, you can talk about how you are a good and deserving person and you’ll be good to go.” Well, as I sat down to write my outline, a thought skirted across my mind. What is the definition of deserving? I obviously could have utilized the Oxford Dictionary for that answer, but that wasn’t going to help me construct this essay. Then the answer came to mind. Me. How could I convince the committee who will be reviewing my essay that I’m deserving if I didn’t even know myself? This question made me dive deep within myself to come up with an application essay that not only satisfied me, but also made me proud of myself and who I have become. I deserve this scholarship because I know what true work-ethic is, I will be using the scholarship to reach my career goals, and I will always overcome “no”. Throughout my high school career I have had to learn work-ethic. I was a very involved student and I had a hard time saying no to someone who needed my help. This caused me to become the “go-to” person for quite a few people. I loved it though, at one point my “normal” was completing not only my own work, but doing that while helping others with theirs, and on top of that juggling two sports and two jobs. The feeling of collapsing into bed after a successfully exhausting day was unbeatable. I am blessed with natural organizational skills that make multi-tasking possible. I am able to make a list in my head of all of the various tasks that I have to have done before the day is complete. Some days I am so frustrated I just wanted to pull my hair out, but I knew that if I focused, I could complete it all. I will never place limits my

Throughout the history of America conflicting beliefs of how the government should affect our lives has been categorized from either a Liberal or a conservative standpoint. A liberal is one who may be considered a radical, one who believes government has a role to play in our lives and moves towards the new age of humanity. Conservatives share a completely different set of beliefs, they believe in the old ways, a government which doesn't influence our lives, and side with the rights of states and the people. According to these beliefs Hoover follows conservative beliefs more or less and Roosevelt follows a more liberal beliefs. These standpoints can be more defined by comparing them with radicals and influential figures of the age.…

Throughout my four years of high school, I have consistently pushed myself beyond my limits and comfort zones in attempt to discover my place in the world. I spent most of first two years discovering who I was as an individual, ultimately manifesting into inspiration for success. I grew out of “fitting in” and decided to turn my life and aspirations towards a greater direction; on this road of discovery, I separated myself from those who valued arrogance and indifference. “Nerd Squad” is what I am a part of today, which is why I am currently confident enough to apply for the National Honors Society Scholarship. I believe I have grown into a tenacious, sympathetic, and joyous young man that the entire school has seen develop, and I am honored…

Why I deserve to be considered for the South Central Border All-Academics Scholarship is an easy answer, because I plan on continuing to play sports in college including dance and maybe throwing the javelin. Most students would give a heart wrenching explanation, but I go on facts. Fact one; I will be continuing to participate in dance at college. Fact two; academics do not come easy to me and so I have to work extremely hard at it. Fact three; I will work extremely hard to make the school record in javelin by throwing 109 feet. Fact four; I will be a part of dance team in college to help pay for books and tuition in college because I can not afford college otherwise. I go on facts and do not believe in lying so I will tell you that dance and…

In the research done by Susan Black “The Search for True Grit” it states, “A quarter century later, psychologists and researchers have refined and redefined several related concepts and constructs, including self-control, self-discipline, self-management, and self-regulation. The terms vary, but researchers agree that these traits are essential for school success” (Black 52). This does not only apply to success in school, but also success in the real world. My mother had me at the age of twenty three and disciplined herself to finish her last year of college to become a teacher. Her road to becoming a teacher was not smooth, but because of her self-discipline she managed to finish college and received her bachelors in English, and go on to receive her certification in teaching. Having four children is not easy, but my mother has disciplined herself to keep up with our extremely busy lives. I take part in various organizations such as band, UIL, student council, and National Honor Society, therefore I am required to follow all of the set rules given to me. The set rules given to me are my responsibility to follow, which means I must have self-discipline. For example, meetings for most of the organizations I am involved in are at seven thirty in the morning, therefore I must go to bed early and wake up early to be able to be on time for the meetings. I am currently the drum major of my school’s…

I am an achiever. There is almost nothing more important to me than having a strong work ethic, not only in a work environment, but also finding a way to include it in my everyday life. I strongly believe that hard work pays off, and there isn’t anything I am not capable of doing as long as I give it my best. First off, my first job was working at a small Italian restaurant when I was only fifteen years old, and I could only keep the job at that age if I got a waiver from my school counselor showing that I was still doing well in my studies. I did my best to manage going to high school, playing soccer, and still finding the energy to show up to work in the evenings. It wasn’t easy, but it gave me a sense of accomplishment at a young age. I remember having to work the overnight shift doing inventory at my second job during my senior year, and still somehow I found the energy to study and make it to school on time. Secondly, I started working at a restaurant equipment store after high school, having been given the title of “receptionist”, only to find out that the job would include much more than just the general office duties that usually come along with this type of position. Not only was I responsible for completing my work that came along with the job, but also to be a personal assistant to the every need of the business owner. At one point I even found myself taking his mother home from an unexpected trip to the emergency room after a routine check-up. My boss and her other children were unfortunately too busy, and I felt responsible for making sure that she had someone there for her. One last example of being an achiever is my dedication and punctuality when it comes to having a job. I do not believe in…

Unquestionably, my limiting style that is working against me and reduces my overall effectiveness stems from my yearning to be a perfectionist and to complete a task to the highest standard. Through implying such a method, I feel that I have subconsciously worked to limit my professional effectiveness in organizations and have not be able to develop as quickly as I’d like as I am constantly held back by tasks which need to be completed and sent out in a quick and specific time frame rather than something that is slow and tenuous in nature.…
