In the essay, “Let the Copula Be,” by Sonya Lanehart, the author talks about her love for english. Growing up and into her career Lanehart thought that there was only one proper way to speak and that was by using “good” english. She thought that anyone who spoke grammatically incorrect was less intelligent than those who spoke “good” english. Lanehart made it her mission to teach people how to speak “good” english. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. Amy Tan, the author of “Mother Tongue,” gives the audience a new outlook and better understanding of the struggles that every immigrant who lives in United States had gone through every day. Amy Tan gives the audience the positive view on the “broken” English speakers by using herself and her mother as an example. Her mother did not get respect from the hospital and also the stockbroker due to her limited use of English. In contrast, Amy Tan was treated very well because of speaking proper English. This shows that there is discrimination between people who speak proper English and people who do not. A dialect or an accent means the words we use and how we pronounce them, and in this case the language is American English. Variations of English that result in local dialects are discussed, reasons for dialect differences are given, and attitudes about dialects are shown in the video. There are several ways that dialects form from "standard" languages. First there is accent or the way the language is pronounced. Amy Tan’s story “Mother Tongue” starts by the affirmation that she is not a scholar of English or literature. She is just a writer and the person who understand the power of language. From Tan’s observations from her daily life, she realizes that there are different types of English that she uses. The first time Tan notices the difference is when she gives a speech on her book “The Joy Luck Club” using academic English, the one that she never uses to talk with her mother. Week one of Language and Literacy for Teachers has broadened my thinking about the English language, how vast it is and the different ways people communicate. The first, and most interesting topic for me that was brought up in week one was vernacular language. “A vernacular variety of language is the form of language people use in their “everyday” lives when they are not speaking as specialists of experts of any sort.” (Gee & Hayes, 2011, p. 8). In this film entitled "American Tongues", the basic message the viewer gets, is that many people have different dialects and that different people have different views about the people who speak them. Some of these views can be negative and offensive, while others can be positive and thoughtful. Regardless, we all can see that dialects have a huge impact on people's lives. In my paper, I will argue that people should learn a standard form of English as long as they are comfortable with it. People shouldn't feel the need to learn a standard form of English, however it is a very good thing to learn and should be put into high consideration.
