but on her journey down the road she faces numerous problems. However, that doesn’t stop her from pursuing her goals. This show has a positive influence on its viewers because it shows diversity and gives us realistic problems that we can all relate to. In this show we are shown a lot of scenes depicting a Hispanic family. Now usually when we see shows about Hispanics they tend to be too over dramatic about their lifestyle or they tend to just make somewhat of a joke about it. In this case they aren’t in this show, they’re actually showing what it’s like for immigrant family members to migrate from one place to another and showing real problems that all have gone through. When watching this show a lot of people can say that they can relate to it. Whether it’s having a family member leave their country, to a person's sexual preference or even the regular norms of being in relationship or the struggle of school and trying to find a job. There’s a little bit of everything in there that we all have been through. In this case, Jane had a grandmother who moved from Venezuela to Miami, and her grandma depicts any other stereotypical grandmother. In this show, Alba is depicted as strict, and loving. She is very strong about her beliefs, but she is willing to be open-minded for her loved ones. She understands English, but prefers to speak Spanish so everyone in her house speaks in Spanish as a sign of respect for her. She has a 46 year old daughter named Xiomara, who still acts like she’s a teen. Xiomara has a daughter named Jane who is more of an adult than her own mother at times. Jane's father who she didn’t know about for a while happens to be one of her favorite novela actors, Rogelio, who has a love corral with her mom for years.
In this first season Jane is in a relationship with Michael, who is a detective who is investigating the hotel she works in. In that hotel, her boss, Rafael, happens to be the father of her baby that she accidentally has, because of Luisa. Originally Luisa was supposed to inseminate Petra, Rafael’s fiancé at the time. But due to the struggles Luisa goes through with her addiction to alcohol she went to work intoxicated and accidentally inseminates the wrong person. With this happening Jane starts thinking if she should have an abortion. When she came to that conclusion she decided to tell her mom and grandma but they both weren’t so keen about what she wanted to get done. In that episode we start seeing flashbacks of Xiomara’s memories from when she first found out she was pregnant from a one night stand so, she decided to get an abortion. When Xiomara decides to finally tell her mom, Alba gets angry with her because Xiomara didn’t feel any regret for getting that done. With this decision on Janes mind it had caused a lot of controversy between them, that made Alba ignore Xiomara for the decision she had made when she was a teenager and got pregnant. In the end they apologize to each other and respect their decisions. Just like in any other family we all have our own opinions and even though we don’t see eye to eye, we don’t let that affect the bond and relationship that we all share with each other. Jane the Virgin shows a universal representation of what it means to be a Latino family living in the United States.
Jane lives in her grandmother's house with her mom, and in the house they mostly speak Spanish because that’s the only language Alba understands. In any family that has a loved one that has migrated from a different country they can relate to this. For Alba being an undocumented immigrant, this subtly humanizes the fear and plight of so many Americans feel today. Her role in shaping Jane’s life feels authentic to the way Latino culture values the importance of the multi-generational extended family. Xiomara was a teen mom, just like many young latinas, and although she’s known for her promiscuous past, she actually turns out to be a good mother. Due to Xiomara's personality and behavior this helps define Jane’s point of view and choices as an adult. Through the complications that Jane goes through through the show Xiomara always brings up a piece of her past in order to help Jane figure out her own
problems.
In the first season of Jane the virgin we are shown Janes life and who she is before she get accidentally inseminated. Now maybe getting accidentally inseminated by someone doesn’t happen all the time but it happened to Jane. Jane was a college student trying to become a successful writer so getting the news that she’s pregnant surprised her. Throughout her pregnancy she doesn’t quit her job or drop out of school. She still continues to follow her dreams. She shows the qualities of strong Latina by not letting an accident stop her from doing what she needs to get done thanks to seeing the powerful women that she has in her life to help guide her. Even though this is something that doesn’t happen to everyone you’d think that since her mom didn’t follow through with her dreams you’d think that Jane would do the same thing. Just like the real world when people started finding out that a virgin was pregnant, people didn’t believe her story while others saw what happened to her as a miracle and praised her. This is something that if it has or did actually happened to a person they would be criticized or seen the same way. The way Jane handled all this publicity is the same way any other person would do. They’d go to their parents or loved them and asked how they should handle this situation.
In this show we see a lot of things that we all have overcome sometime in our life and through it all, we had our family and friends right there next to us to help us out. Yes, there was times that you couldn’t come to the same agreement, but over time you both realize that there will be times that you will agree and things that you don’t agree on and it's okay. Besides the show having villains in it, the rest of the problems all these characters face any person can relate to at least one of these situations.
