Jared Morgan Alternate Ending Essay
Prologue
Jared Morgan sat on the edge of his bed sharpening his knife. Only sounds of the wind were heard from outside of his door. His blond hair hung in front of his worried green eyes as he glanced every so often out his window. Suddenly, a thud broke the silence. He got up, sheathed his knife in the dark brown scabbard in his belt and walked over to the window. The woman that was once outside enjoying the night sky was not. He looked down and saw her body lying on the ground, her throat slit, gushing blood, drenching the top of her dress. He saw a shadow move outside by his neighbor’s cottage.
“They’re here,” he said under his breath. Jared rushed to the back bedroom where his two sons lied on their beds asleep. He dashed over to them and woke them up.

“Whatever you do, don’t come out until I say.” He then briskly walked back to his room as the confused boys closed and locked their door.
Jared grabbed his broad sword from under the bed and pulled the work of art from its scabbard. Its steel blade shined. Jared breathed a sigh of remembrance and then ran outside into the chilled night air.
He had known this day would come. They were looking for him. The shadow grunts, orc like things with shadow covering their body and black Arabian masks. They had two knives with ridged blades. They kill only for enjoyment unless they are sent for something or someone, like Jared.
He dashed to the next-door cottage, broke the door down, and charged in. It was silent, deathly silent, and blacker than the night.
Back in the boys’ room they wondered what the confusion was all about. The youngest of the boys, Drake, was too confused and tired what to think. While the older brother, Siris, was pacing back and forth in front of the window.
“Aren’t you worried about dad?” said

He stabbed his end table, about half an inch deep then yanked it out as if he hadn't had it deeply embedded in the small end table. He then took out a sharpening stone and violently sharpened his knife as his sister silently watched him, leaning on their locked door. He glared at her, icy as she acted like he did nothing. He muttered, "Dearest sister..." She smirked as if she knew what he was going to say. He put the stone down and traced his finger with it, drawing blood at the slightest touch. He walked over to her and placed the flat side of the blade against her cheek and pinned her against the…

I started by asking Mr. and Mrs. Smith what they remembered about the night. The mother hesitantly replied saying her son had told her that he heard weird footsteps before he was attacked. She then started to weep from the realization that the footsteps were from the attacker. As her husband tried to comfort his grieving wife, I asked him what was taken from the house. He thought for a moment and then replied, “Nothing, not a God damn thing.”…

The glistening, white snow fell slowly to the ground outside the window. The distinct shapes of the snowflakes shown; the light from the street lamp seeping through the cracks. The mumble of the heater in the corner of the room; the faint sound of the blood dripping onto the floor were the only sounds. He lay there; motionless. The thuds were entering the silent room once again. The creaking of the wooden floor grew louder and louder. Still the light of the street lamp shone through the window and onto the far wall. The nasty figure walked into the murky room. Only its shadow appeared on the far wall behind it. The boy in the bed was Eli. His tiny eight year old body was red with his own blood. Then……

‘In the distance the rumble of guns is faint but persistent like the subdued throbbing of violins in a symphony. I am still here, it says. You may sleep quietly at night in sweet smelling hay, you may lie sweating under a tree after drill and marvel at the fine tracings on a trembling leaf over your heads, but I am here and you must come back to my howling madness, to my senseless volcanic fury. I am the link that binds you to your future, it mutters.’…

Dexter Morgan was a hero. His time was spent working in blood spatter analysis on the Miami Metro Police force. He was a brother, step-son, husband and father. Following in the footsteps of their father, Dexter along with his sister, Deb, worked on cases that sprung up in the Miami area for the local police department. They grew up in the police force lifestyle and went on to emulate their father before them. Their father, Harry, was a force to be reckoned with. He was stern, militant, but he loved his children. Harry wanted the best for them and stressed the need for justice and protecting the weak, as a police officer would. His children grew to be strong individuals with can-do attitudes in the work place. Dexter grew tired of the mundane…

Her curls slip through his fingers and before he knows it, he is the one trapped between a killer and a brick wall. There is a moment of silence in the grand library, all is still but the tick-tock of an intricate clock hanging above the mantle and the harsh cocking of a handgun. Slowly and gracefully, without taking her eyes or pistol off of the man, the woman picks up a small velvet bag from the shadows pooling on the hardwood…

Jack Kidman watched as the dust settled around the tips of his boots, the old leather synonymous with the rotting wood of the bank. 2:15 in the morning was not sitting well with him, and the effort of thinking had his head pounding. Sighing, he looked back to his brother, who was alert and tense. Dallas, the younger of the pair, held his revolver loosely in his right hand. Hunched in the shadows, the glint of the gun was the only thing that stood out about Dallas’s dark figure. Jack looked across the dark ghost of a large chandelier to the other side of the lobby, where another silhouette crouched. A quick, sharp whistle echoed across the room, and the three men stepped silently into the moonlight.…

I pry my eyes open after yet another restless night. For a fleeting moment, I feel peaceful as my body lays completely still and my thoughts are silenced; unfortunately, the brief moment of serenity quickly fades, leaving in its place a sense of gut wrenching guilt. These days, it seems to be the only emotion that I am capable of feeling. Images of Duncan’s bloodied body appear in my mind and I feel a wave of nausea hit me. My fingers instinctively wrap around the candle by my bedside.…

March 24, 2011 was a cold, bitter day. I had sat in my chair in front of the glass, slider, door peaking out to the house across the river that had haunted me for years. I could just make out the shadow of the young man who had frightened me throughout my childhood. The house held a cold glaze and it's horrifying characteristics seemed to escape from the windows of the house. I had planned this day over and over for three years. Everyday I'd think, and I'd think, and I'd think, about every movement of my plan to execute the man that took my life. I had boated down the river about a quarter of a mile so I could come to the house through the back of the woods. Gun in hand I stepped out of the boat and began my trek through the woods.…

I glanced up to see my father’s clenched fist raised above his shoulder, ready to strike again. Behind him, the sturdy frame of my Uncle Jed stood tall against the off-white walls. My father’s grimacing face and angered eyes swung to look at him, and he released his firm grip on my collar. I took the swift opportunity and retreated to my room. I lay down on my rickety single bed closing my eyes.…

I faintly remember what happened that night, that’s the reason why I’m sitting here. I can’t think clearly, see straight and yet I continue to see glimpses of him, his baby blue eyes, greasy black hair and oily face that sheds a smile every so often. I didn’t mean for everything to be this way, I feel as if it’s my fault, that maybe I’m the suspect. I feel as if there’s a blunt knife digging deeper into the guilty walls of my soul. As I peer around the room, I notice one streak of sunlight, fighting for survival in the dark and dampened room.…
