Inslee showed his courageous actions through this initiative when he said, "While Congress has failed for years to make progress on reducing gun violence, we are not afraid to take action in Washington state," at a Burien news conference. From the data Inslee's office found on gun related violence in teh years 2012-2014, 665 people died per year due to firearms compared to the 495 people that die in car accidents (Thompson, "Inslee calls for strengthening background checks of gun buyers"). Further information showed that approximately 80% of these gun related deaths were succomb by suicide. Inslee's initiative was not only about strenghtening background checks with the purchase of firearms, it was what he called a "public health approach" to gun violence (Groover, "Here's What Governor Jay Inslee's Executive Order on Gun Violence Will Do").
