Is War the Right Choice? By: Jessica Enriquez.
On December 7, 1941, a life-changing event will alter the lives of many of those who served during that time. Could they have known that? Could they have prepared themselves better? Where did they go wrong? Is it right to blame the government for not acting fast enough or for making the wrong decision too soon? I think all these questions have a similar answer. Roosevelt, the current president of that time, fighting back was our only reasonable option at the time. Not just to protect ourselves, but because that’s what the situation calls for. I believe that defense will only get someone so far. What will make the attacks stop if we do not attack back? If our military hadn’t pushed their barrages back onto Japan, what else could we have done to make Japan’s intrusions come to an end? Furthermore, our defenses were down. There was no way for anyone at the time to predict the oncoming force of the Empire’s assaults. While I may agree violence is cruel in some cases, innocent lives were stolen and who knew when there was more to be ceased? Action needed to be taken immediately, or perhaps even more military bases would be wrecked. “I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.” (Paragraph 22) To start, I would like to explain that this quote supports my argument because even in the trivial amount of time the president had to act, he held himself with composure and ensured us that America would stand up to Japan.
