The construction of the Three Gorges Dam which has caused migration, changes in the lifestyle as well as choice of job of the local people of Fengjie, Chaina have been depicted in the movie “Still life”by Jia Zhang-Ke. The movie is mostly based on social issues. Additionally, it visualizes and emphasizes on how people’s life change when they become victims of floods and dam constructions; however, it never comes to a standstill. Although it is an experimental movie apart from commercial movies, it has reached its goal to bring the social issues into reality through the lighting, sound, framing and camera position used in the movie.
Migration is one of the most prominent consequences of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. During the construction of the dam many people lost their home and they had to relocate to other places like Guangdong, Liaoning. For example, Missy and her daughter left Fengjie and went to work on Wanzhou Highway in Yichang. In the 4th part of the movie (16:52-20:00), the man finally meets his wife. In the scene/sequence, when the man meets his wife after 16 years, long shot was taken to present an overall idea about the place where Missy ma and her daughter are living. There was sound of steamers which is a diegetic sound drawing the viewer’s attention to a small tent near a river where the two characters are having a conversation. Here, long shot was used to capture the position and facial expression of the two characters. The lighting was low key contrast as there was usage of only back light, which focused on Missy and her ex-husband’s face. The lighting set up showed the anguish of Missy because of her arduous life and the sorrow in the gloomy face of the man that he could not meet his daughter.
