Job Shadow Assignment
For this assignment I decided to do a job shadow at Assure Drug Detection here in La Grande because it’s a field that requires knowledge of Biochemistry which is something that interests me. For my job shadow I shadowed a Lab Technician named Chung Pak. Overall I enjoyed the experience. Chung was very open and willing to answer any questions I had. I arrived at 10am and before I began my shadow I asked Chung what his daily duties entailed. I was informed that where he was primarily a Lab Tech he also takes care of clerical duties within the office such as answering phones, replying to emails, contacting the court, and putting client information into the database.
A typical day for Chung starts with him opening the lab. Opening the lab includes making sure the lab is

I asked him to explain his work environment and what types of skills and training someone would need to be successful at his job. He informed me that the work environment is pretty low stress and for the most part calm, aside from the few angry clients he encounters from time to time. Chung told me that the main technical skills you would need to possess is an understanding of biochemistry and basic arithmetic. As for training he said it’s mainly just on-the-job training. I asked if there was any regulations or special guidelines that he needs to follow. Chung told me that there aren’t any special regulations that he or his co-workers need to follow aside from the OHSA guidelines.
Overall I would say I learned a lot from this job shadow opportunity. Where I am sure I would have learned a lot about my major from attending an upper division course I am glad that I decided to do a job shadow in a field I find interesting instead. I say this because I learned a lot more than I thought I would along with finding out whether or not I would enjoy working in a work environment like
