The book a painted house was written by the famous author John Grishman. John Grishman was born in Arkansas, this book plays off some of his experiences to growing up in the natural state. Grishman is mainly known for legal thrillers such as The Rooster Bar, Camino Island and the one I have heard of, A Time to Kill. This story is considered a change from his normal type of work, it explorers rural Arkansas during the 1950s. The story as I stated before is mostly a coming of age story for our young protagonist. Luke Chandler starts the story as a seven-year-old innocent kid that world changes during the cotton-picking season. Before the book starts he has yet to experience the harsh reality of the word or the hard work of farming. He sees the interactions between the Mexicans, hill people and his family shape his view of the world. The biggest transformation I believe he takes is witnessing the two murders that occur during this book. He is forced to lie during both murders to save his family from losing workers and go into debt. Another side theme is the latcher family I didn’t mention during the characters section. His older family members view the latcher family as a lesser family and this impacts him during this story. Such as when he is afraid of his family losing value due to his uncle potentially marring one of the latchers.
Conclusion

The fact that the book was an Arkansas based book helped me stick with it and sink in. In general, I like this book much more than a lot of books I have read but it was still good. In the future I may be inclined to push into Gresham’s main genre the legal thriller. I hope to incline others to read this book because it’s a good book with strong
