John Lubbock once wrote, “Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it”. An individual’s character represents the type of person who they really are. The statement made by John Lubbock is incorrect because when two people are choosing the right decision, the outcomes are different for each individual. Although choosing the right decisions can have an impact on a person’s character, outside influences are more effective when defining who we really are. Our character traits are formed by influences beyond our control through our mental and physical state. Initially, the mental state of a person is influenced by what they encounter in their lifetime. In the grocery store the other day, I learned how people are still being prejudice towards African Americans due to what happened many years ago. Even though each person has their own opinions, they may influence those who do not know the matter very well and may base their assumptions on that person’s opinion. In a news report by CNN, interviewees had an easier time interviewing people with at least a high school education because they were able to make a smooth interview. This shows how it is easy to interact with intelligent like people because they are more understandable when making conversation. Another example of how social state can be influenced by outside sources, if a child was not allowed to go a friend’s party or attend sleepovers because of over protective parents, it is likely that the child will grow up to be introverted. Having less human contact can really change a person when acting around the general public. They would never know how to interact unless they know the person intimately. Without a doubt, the social state of a person is usually determined by the speculation of the world’s society. In summation, our character is formed by influences beyond our control due to the experiences we encounter in our lifetime that affect our mental health.
