John Tuzo Wilson was born in Ottawa, Canada on October 24th, in 1908. He died in Toronto, Canada on April 15th, 1993. He was the eldest child of the family. His nicknames were either Jack or Jock, but later his middle name was made to be “Tuzo.” His father was a scottish engineer. His father died when John Wilson was only 16 years old. They were not a rich family. Tuzo obtained an excellent education. First to graduate from Geophysical Studies and get a BA degree from this in 1930. His siblings were expected to walk 4 miles to school everyday.
His specific contribution was proving the Theory of Plate Tectonics. He …show more content…
proved this theory by combining other scientists research. Other scientists like Harry Hess,Eduard Suess, Alfred Wegener, and Robert Dietz, ect… Harry Hess proved that there was fossils from each continent area that matched up with each other if you were to put the fossil area’s by each other/ fit together the continents to match to fossils. Alfred Wegener proved that the seafloor spreads to make new seafloor. This process that he made up is called,”Seafloor Spreading.” Seafloor Spreading is the process in which a oceanic plate sinks into a trench and gets melted to a molten material toward the Mantle. Then new material from the Mantle rises up and cools on the way to make new sea floor. Robert Dietz helped figure out the geology of the seafloor, and geological aspects to the Theory of Plate Tectonics.Eduard Suess helped lay the basics of Plate Tectonics. Now we know today how the plates work more and we know more information about the Theory of Plate Tectonics all thanks to John Wilson's discovery that changed everything about the thought of Earth.
They had a scanner on bottom of boats to scan the ocean floor so they can map the ocean floor. Then those people found these rock stripes under the ocean floor rising up to make new floor. This is what Wilson used to figure out the movement of the seafloor. When Eduard Suess argued that horizontal movements of the lithosphere (the Earth’s rocky outer shell), rather than vertical uplift, played the dominant role in creating mountain ranges by folding and thrust faulting. Suess assumed that volcanism (notably magmatic activity) was a consequence of mountain building rather than its cause, as was widely held at that time. Alfred wegener proved the Theory of Continental Drift. This helped out a lot with the development of the Theory of Plate Tectonics. Difficulties he could have gone through could be funding the equipment he could’ve used. Now we can use a GPS to see the progress of how the plates are moving. The GPS can also the movement within a plate. John Wilson would’ve been able to see that the plates moved sooner.
Other info about Wilson would be that his father had died when wilson was only 16 years old.
