John thinks his wife is suffering from postpartum depression, depression after giving birth. John locks his wife in an old room in there house that was once a nursery. John thinks that having his wife live in a nursery that it will help her get over her depression.
John does not allow his wife to leave the house ever or her room often. SHe does not say anything about this or argue with her husband about it. She starts seeing things on the wall with the yellow wallpaper. At first she sees a woman trapped behind the wallpaper representing the lack of freedom the woman had. She thinks the woman behind the yellow wallpaper is creeping around. Towards the end of the story the husband leaves and the wife tells everyone to leave her alone and not to come in her room that she is tired and just wants to sleep all day. While she is in her room she starts peeling the yellow wallpaper off trying to reach the woman to free
