Part One opens above the water, not far from the shore. Jonathan Seagull was alone once again, practicing his flight while the rest of the gulls squabbled for food. Jonathan Seagull fell and failed, but got up again without shame. He was the only gull to actually enjoy flying, as the rest of his Flock only valued food and survival. Because of his preference, he was ostracized and was constantly alone.
Everyday, Jon spent hours upon hours practicing, and his parents were not happy about it at all. His mother pleaded with him to be like the other gulls, saying that because he preferred flying and not looking for food, Jonathan was like “bone and feathers.” Though Jon didn’t mind his body, he still listened to his mother and tried to be like the others. Above the sea, he flew fast and hard, but fell every time. He became better with each try until he had his victory, but his triumph was short-lived. He fell into the dark water, and passed out. When he gained consciousness again, it was already dark; and he felt a lot like a failure. He reasoned that flying was simply not for him. He did not have the wings for flying, like falcons. Because of his resignation from flying, he promised to himself that he would become a normal gull. Jon started to fly for shore, where the rest of his Flock was. While flying, a voice inside his head told him that he shouldn’t have been flying at night. He was a seagull, not an owl, or a falcon. But then, an idea struck Jon – the falcon’s short wings! He retracted some part of his wings until they were like a falcon’s, and started flying. This time, he did not
