Death, murder, and depression are a few of Edgar Allan Poe’s favorite areas to write about. This is a vital reason his pieces are considered Gothic Literature. Gothic Literature, also referred to as “brooding romantics,” explored the capacity for evil. These writers arranged their works with emphasis on emotion, nature, and the individual. However, they did not center their matters on positivity as the other romantics did. Instead, they often included elements of fantasy and the supernatural. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “Fall of the House of Usher” the ghost of Madeline comes to haunt Rodrick and this happens because Rodrick buries Madeline alive. The Ushers’ house falls down this happens because the rest of the Ushers died. For instance, “We have put her living in the tomb!” (29). This is when Rodrick goes insane and admits his sins to his best friend, he shows that he believes that she is still alive in the tomb/coffin which refers that she is able to live in a closed space for days with low amount of air. Can a house drive a person insane? In Fall of the House of Usher that is exactly what happened. Edgar Allan Poe wrote like this because he had a very difficult life full of death. When Poe was just a baby his father ran away, leaving Poe and his mother. Just a few years later Poe’s mother died of tuberculosis leaving him an orphan to be adopted by the Allan family. When Poe was 15, his best friend’s mother and influence for writing, Jane Stannard, died of brain cancer. After, Mrs. Allan caught tuberculosis, and while she was sick Mr. Allan had many affairs in the same house. This angered Poe and he began to strongly dislike Mr. Allan. Years later Mrs. Allan died of tuberculosis and Poe had to be adopted by his aunt. While living with his aunt he fell in love with her daughter Virginia Clemm. Virginia later caught tuberculosis and died. These are the deaths that drove Edgar Allan Poe’s writing style. Explaining events of foreshadowing, symbols and explaining a theme will help in understanding The Fall of…
