I have worked in Vietnam for 27 years for an import and export company and I am currently working for a Korean Mobil company as an accounting assistant. My long-term goal at Highline College is achieving the Accounting Class with an AAS degree, which will give me more opportunities to continue looking for a job is better as an accountant in the future. It will help navigate me to create a plan and accomplish that plan step by step. We would like to take a few minutes of your time to introduce you to this exceptional program. According to Pathways director Kelly Ramirez, Pathways to College was the vision of past WLC president Tim Kriewall and the program accepted its first students in 2007. Although located on the WLC campus, Pathways to College is a non-profit organization independent from WLC. With the mission “to create a belief that college is an option for everyone (Pathways pamphlet),” the program assists lower-income college prospects who are “first-generation” students (neither of their parents have graduated from college) and have the potential to succeed in college. In this program, students develop academically, socially, and spiritually for college. The program also assists them in finding the financial resources to attend college. The ultimate goal is to increase “the number of lower income and minority students pursuing and completing a post high school education.” (Pathways…

Over time, I have faced many obstacles such as dyslexia, emotional trauma, and family challenges. All through these challenges, I never let anything deter me from my course of attending college. Despite being able to overcome obstacles, I have come to realize there are things in life that I have little to no control over. Now that I have had time to experience the joys, hard work, and endless opportunities that come with being a college student, I have come too far to let anything stop me from finishing this chapter of my life. When I arrived to the United States from my home country of Venezuela, I had little knowledge of the English language. When I arrived here, the main things I knew were how to count from one to ten, the colors, and how to introduce myself- “Hello, my name is Guillermo”. When I was living in Pennsylvania my first year, all my friends were Hispanic. I would speak in Spanish at home and at school. However, I realized that if I was speaking in Spanish regularly, it would not help me learn English. From then on, I decided to focus more on the lectures that the teacher gave us. I would speak with teachers and other students so that I could learn more. Learning English in about three years was not easy. It required hard work and dedication. I’m still learning it, but now I have enough knowledge to say that I have learned the language through perseverance.…
