Kamehameha was 14 when his father died and his uncle, Kalani‘opu‘u adopted him and treated him as a son. As Kamehameha grew older he also grew into a strong, skilled warrior thanks to Kekuhaupi’o, his trainor. For Kamehameha to become a great leader he was taught spear throwing and dodging, wrestling, and the basic tactics of warfare. Kamehameha also learned navigation, astronomy, history, genealogy, religious practices, kapa, and other information vital to become a district chief. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was organized, intelligent, and hardworking. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was organized. One example is when Kamehameha assigned advisors to each island after he united all of the Hawaiian islands, and some of his advisors were John Young and Ke’eaumoku. The reason for Kamehameha to do this is because he knew that he needed trustworthy people to keep his islands safe and protected. For example when Kamehameha found out about the demand of sandalwood he got involved with the sandalwood trade. Kamehameha established a royal monopoly to protect the sandalwood trade. The sandalwood trade was endangering the amount of sandalwood so Kamehameha created the royal monopoly as something new. The royal monopoly was very helpful to the sandalwood and the people of Hawaii. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was hardworking. One example is when Kamehameha became chief of the Hawaiian islands there were new buildings that were built. Kamehameha and other ali’i took part in public works such as working in the taro patches to help the commoners. Kamehameha started something new by helping the commoners with public works.What Kamehameha started helped the commoners get the job done faster because the commoners believed that if they can do it then we can do
