Kanzi And Novel Sentences Analysis
Response

In the video called Kanzi and Novel Sentences it is clear that Kanzi does understand what is being asked of him. He is able to follow commands that are said by his trainer, which demonstrates an ability to comprehend language as seen within the video. The reasoning why this video can be used as evidence that Kanzi does comprehend language is the fact the trainer is saying new or novel sentences. Meaning that Kanzi has never heard these words put together in those sentences. Kanzi is able to take the action or verb with the right object to show that he understands language. There are many language skills that are not being shown since Kanzi is not asked to communicate anything to his trainer. This causes the viewer to have no idea

“Keyed in” published by Internet blogger Voxi is a persuasive article regarding the technological boom being experienced by not only today’s youth but by society in general. Published on May 23, 2009 on website Ctrl Alt “Keyed in” Voxi, contends that society and its members should herald the implementation of new technology and welcome it with open arms, contrasting the internet with great historical discoveries such as Darwinism and the reorganisation of the cosmos. The title itself has a double meaning, the first and most obvious of which is the literal keyboard associated with technology and the second refers to those who are keyed in to an ever-changing society and willing to move with it as opposed to be left behind. The article begins with a non-confrontational tone however throughout Voxi begins to show a more compelling tone. Accompanying Voxi’s article is a picture of a human head withholding a microchip that projects multiple layers, the main point of this is to make the reader think about how technology has been embedded into the core of society and implemented into every layer of the world today. Voxi’s contention is pro digital technology and is this is strategically withheld until the 5th paragraph so that readers will read on, curious of the writers contention…

Primates are one of the most interesting mammals on earth, not only because of their complex social structures, but because they hold so many similar characteristics to humans. Primates are often cited as our closest living relatives and on two separate occasions I observed four separate species of primates at the San Diego Zoo that can justify their use of their physical characteristics and behaviors that may be similar as well as different to the other primates and ours.…

For example, when Mrs. Piper was demonstrating how to make a lowercase M, she used the tips if her fingers to trace the M and says, “like this, so you go like this”. Joaquin understands `Mrs. Piper and begins tracing the letter M as told and then responds, “like this?”. Joaquin’s M went above the horizontal line and to correct Joaquin she would say things such as “no taller, no taller.” Joaquin seems to comprehend this, as he stops his self from going above the line. When Mrs. Piper Showed Joaquin how to make the humps of the M, she would demonstrate tracing the humps using her fingers, saying “now go over, now go over” Joaquin understand, and as a result he was able to make the correct M formation, besides the fact that the last leg fell a little short.…

We can see how overall how comprehensible input and output are crucial during the clip where Lucy is making him read from a children’s book, and Ricky is struggling with all the words that end in “o-u-g-h” because of all the different sounds that “o-u-g-h” makes in English; the input was not comprehensible based on what he knows in Spanish or what he knows in English in terms of reading written text, so the output was not comprehensible in either language. I don’t think that this is a very good clip to demonstrate how Ricky uses languages with Lucy because most of the the responses we get from Ricky are in Spanish, which Lucy does not understand. This could be on an ongoing thing, but I can only imagine that he doesn’t always use Spanish when communicating with Lucy. In the first couple of opening clips, we can see that when Ricky uses Spanish with Lucy, she doesn’t understand hardly anything that is being said and has a confused look on her face (which I am sure we will see on our students’ faces at some point too). We can, however, see that comprehensible input and output are crucial in how he uses languages with his friends; since he is more comfortable with Spanish (an assumption based on what I saw because there was limited moments of conversations in English), he is more comfortable talking to his friends who are also Spanish speakers.…

Also, if a sentence isn’t structured correctly it could be misunderstood. The same goes for the Deaf Culture in their structures. With only having so many signs some words can mean different things depending on where they’re placed or with facial structures. This was shocking in the video because it’s a shock of realization that people do the same with spoken words. Not everything in Deaf Culture is as complicated as most people make it seem because what we see as complicated they see as normal and vice-versa.…
