Othello
Is there one kind of mindset in the book Othello? Some people might think since this was a time where everyone practically had to be the same and do the same things everyone would think the same too. But in reality we are human and we all think differently. A lot of us do certain things to uphold our image, and to “keep order” within our social class.
In the classic book Othello written by Shakespeare, one of the characters- Iago states, “Ay there’s the point. As to be bold with you. Not to affect many proposed matches of her own clime, complexion, and degree. Whereto we see in all things nature trends- Foh! One may smell in such a will most rank, Foul disproportion thoughts unnatural- But pardon me- I do not position. Distinctly speak of her, though I may fear. Her will, recoiling to her better judgement, may fall to match you with her country forms and happily repent” (Act 3: scene 3). Iago feels it is unjust for Desdemona to marry a black man because they are not the same race, or of the same social status. The meaning ‘rank’ in Shakespeare is best defined as a Sexually Transmitted Disease. Therefore, Iago is saying that Desdemona is marrying a black man because she wants to get a sexually transmitted disease. And many people found it unnatural for a woman who was not black to marry a black man. In this case people found it unnatural for Desdemona to marry Othello. Since she was marrying him, many people thought that she already had a STD which was why she was marrying him. Iago says, “Trifles light as air are to the jealous confirmations strong.
