For example, when I am supervising a project, I respect the rights of others and understand my role to guide not micromanage. I try to check in with my coworkers to ensure their work is on track and to know the status of their project. This allows me to see what kind of work everyone is capable of doing on their own. I have also found that leading by example is important because people are willing to work harder especially if they find a manager doing the same work. For example Last year after a record snow storm I helped to transport volunteers for senior snow shoveling program. Even though it was not my project I understood certain things had to get done. Many characteristics of my personality clash with that of an ideal guardian. For example as a guardian, I am supposed to take pride in being perceived trustworthy and dependable, but I do not go out of my way impress others.
As Guardian, I am supposed to believe traditions are the most important and that holding on to them helps bind a community together. Guardians are often seen as Traditionalists because we try to preserve traditions of the groups we belong. For some people, certain routine help to understand where they belong and how to function. When something goes wrong, I do not always follow the chain of command to fix a problem
When dealing with interoffice politics, I sometimes take things too personally. This trait is also at odds with the Guardian personality. Because guardians tend to rely on authority and have a strong understanding of what’s right and wrong. This sometimes leads to coworkers being treated in an impersonal way which could create a negative working atmosphere.
To combat my weaknesses, I need to begin focusing more on myself and less on work related issues, especially after hours. Walk away from people or circumstances that would aggravate my impulsive behavior. Often these situations will still be waiting after I have had time to think and calmed down. Take a deep breath and discuss the problem with a friend before yelling at someone out of anger. I need to practice calming strategies, such as muscle relaxation, yoga, and cardiovascular exercise. When confronted with a difficult decision I need to begin by writing a list of pros and cons before proceeding.
