Achieved Failure Achieved status: This is a social position that a person acquires on the basis of merit; it is a position that is eared or chosen and reflects a person’s skills, abilities, and efforts. In the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, He takes us through the journeys of two characters that are from two different world yet they share a common hinder in their lives. Rowdy and Penelope have both successfully achieved an achieved status, unfortunately this status has done more cons than pros. Alexie shows the diminishing growth and development between the two characters in throughout their everyday lives. Achievements of success are seen as positive attributes. Thus leading to a certain achieved status and maintaining that status can be a burden. All achievements are not positive achievements, in fact some hinder your ability to grow and develop. On the reservation, a real man is a strong man; he shows no weakness and does not take crap from anyone. Rowdy exerts all of these qualities, as well as fulfilling this image of a rough, tough guy, “Rowdy is the toughest kid on the rez. He is long and lean and strong like a snake” (15). Rowdy is seen as a dominant “Alpha male” on the reservation, this meaning an aggressive and dominant bully. Being known for being tough is a self-achievement, but having to maintain that status conflicts with him internally as well as externally. Having the burden of perpetuating this status hinders his psychological and emotional growth with others, including family and friends. This dominantly reflects upon his best friend Junior, who is well aware of Rowdy’s lack of affection towards him, “well Rowdy would miss me, but he’d never admit that he’d miss me. He is way too tough for that kind of emotion” (16). It is unfortunate that Rowdy’s attitude in relations to Junior interferes with the emotional bond between them. Rowdy is unable to develop an
