Kickball: A Short Story
The red sphere of fury. Ever since day one of the sport, that's how I referred to the kickball. It never changed. I have been terrified of this faded red ball coming anywhere near my face, so I never bothered to run for a catch, or even really try. That's probably why I was never any good at sports. I was okay at tennis, and maybe even moderately good at cross country. But anything that involved me catching a ball, you might as well already say I lost. So naturally, when I ran up to kick the ball, it went straight into the arms of the pitcher. My fellow classmates groaned, but told me it was a good effort. We all knew they were lying. I knew that they hated having the most unathletic girl on their team, but they didn't seem to show it.

As the book aims to decode the everyday practices of South Asian American masculinity, each chapter details one segment and experience of sport and leisure. The commitment young South Asian American men have to it demonstrates key elements of social formation and co-ethnic intimacy in a large multi-racial city of Atlanta. Pick-up basketball presents one way to provide different and differential claims to the city. Through intentionally organizing pick-up basketball games, South Asian American basketball players create opportunities to enjoy co-ethnic socializing while putting into place this alternate time and space outside of their busy work and family lives. We see in this chapter the formation of the team Atlanta Outcasts, their early basketball…

After we warmed up it was time to play the final game. We were the home team so we were in the field first. I was playing center field and it was so hot outside that I felt like I was going to melt. When the umpire yelled, ”Play Ball!” I jumped up on my feet and was ready for the first pitch. On the very first pitch the batter hit the ball straight to me. I watched the ball go up in the air and I was putting my glove up in the air ready to catch the ball but then I lost track of it. My sunglasses did not help me with the sun. I was trying to find the ball, but then SMACK! The ball hit me straight in the mouth and I fell to the ground like a sack of…

In this version of kickball basketball there are 2 teams with about 13 players on each team. The game is still played on a full sized basketball court. In this game the pitcher rolls out the ball to the kicker, and the kicker kicks it. After the kick has been made, the objective of the offense is for them to run as fast as they can around the basses to get to home plate before the defense makes 5 passes and shoot the ball into the basket. However, if the offensive player gets around all three bases before the defense makes their 5 passes and a shot, the runner must tag the next person in line on offense. Then that person starts to run around the bases. If the defensive basket…

So we kinda knew we were gonna win, but we didn’t want to jinx it and lose. We had a fantastic game and won 14-1. I had a total 0 plays out in the outfield and that sure was a whole lot of fun. I went 3-4 when I was batting which is ok but I could have gone 4-4, Since I wasn’t seeing the ball out of the pitcher's hand I was late on the ball and was all in all, a bad game. Our season was doing really well and ended really poorly, It ended by us losing 9-1, We were not happy nor were we upset that we lost. but we understood we needed to get better. Whereas High school baseball is gonna be way better cause we don’t play the same teams we play easier teams. Which is nice because we will win much easier and not have any competition. The high school team consistently wins regionals which is cool and they have been to state a couple…

I was tackled three times by several different football players, but I never lost a flag to them. When the teacher finally called time, I had a limp and no new flags. If I was going to win this game I would need to team up with one of my classmates. I didn’t have many choices since all the athletes already partnered off, so I was left with my friend Dylan and a seventh grader who was about half the height of everyone else. I chose the seventh grader. We worked well together and managed to steal several flags from our opponents, but my partner rolled her ankle and decided to sit out the next round, so I was left without a partner again. Before the teacher could start the next round I quickly made a deal with Dylan to work…

I had struck out most of the up-bats before that (I wasn’t necessarily the best baseball player back then). However, I was completely ready for the ball to come at me. I grasped the handle of the cold, hard bat tightly. The ball flew right over the home plate, and I hit it with all the power I had left in my body. The ball went soaring, looking like a white bird migrating south. The ball landed unquestionably far into right field, and as soon as it did, I started to sprint to first base. I decided that it would be safe to round to second base. I had already been past second base when the player playing right field got to the ball. I made it to third base, wondering if I could sprint home. I decided to wait, but I clearly could have ran to home plate. It took a while to process what had just happened. I had just hit a two-run RBI triple! I hadn’t even noticed the two runners on base come home, since I was really in the moment. Our team got through the inning, and it was my turn to pitch. This was only the second time that I had ever pitched while playing baseball! I ran out to the mound, and I started to warm up with the catcher. I rolled the hard, slightly dirty ball in my fingertips. “You can do this, Nathan,” I thought to myself nervously. “The whole team is relying on you.” After a bit of time, I was able to strike out two players and get a groundout to end the…

Softball runs in my blood, my dad played softball, my uncle played softball, my cousins’ play softball; it seemed as though almost every I knew played softball. I knew how to swing a bat before I knew how to walk. My dad and I would go to the batting cages just about every Sunday. I had previous played for the local team in my area but I wanted to be able to share the sport my family and I loved with the school I love. And although the friendships on the travel team were amazing, I could only imagine how great it would be to share this great sport with the people at my school. I thought all I would have to do is talk to the athletic director to get a team started, little did I know all the work and dedication that was going to be have to put…

The two years were spent worrying who was better than who, talking about each other, and never feeling like I belonged. At the end of my eighth- grade year, I tore my ACL and meniscus. Instead of being buttressed through the toughest time of my life, my teammates started a rumor that I was faking my injury because I didn’t think I’d make the freshman team. Yes, this went all around the school, and it wasn’t until I had surgery and started the long road back to even being able to walk that it was finally put to rest, I had not faked any injury.…

Despite my fear of every upperclassman, I tried to become mentally focused for the start of the tryout. The coach walked up to the field standing at 6’6 and a deep voice that could scare Christmas away from kids, he then shouted to the athletes, “Get on the goal line we are doing sprints.” Sweat began to pour down my face while pumping my legs and arms as fast as I could to keep up with the upperclassmen. I wanted to catch the coach’s eye and prove that I could handle playing with the upperclassman. Halfway during the sprints some athletes began to quit and walk off the field because they thought it was too intense and weren't ready for the challenge. Now those who quit new their chances of making the team became slim. I sparked an…
