Long, long ago there was a place that nobody wanted to go to. There was no population and nothing there. There was no specific reason no one wanted to go, it was just the name for the place that made it sound inferior. It was called the “Great American Desert”. I meen that is a terrible name, especially back in the olden days. Nobody would want to live in a place where it is always hot and air conditioning was invented. Also, there is supposedly no water. “The Great American Desert” was the old name for Nebraska. I know it is very hard to believe. There was a man by the name of Edwin E. Perkins. He was living a fine life that any indigent person would die for, but he just couldn't find his place. He wanted to invent …show more content…
something and become well known, or at least known. But he couldn't find his inspiration to make anything.
When he heard about this place, the great american desert, a light bulb when off in his head.
He thought of a refreshing drink that anyone living at this place would want. They would buy it from him as a powder and dissolve it in water. At the time he had know idea that there was no population there. So without knowing he decided to go the this place called The Great American Desert. He said buy to his wife and told her that he would be back in just a few months with more money and a company. He set off on his journey to “The Great American Desert”. He thought he would just trade for a house and start on his idea right away, but since there was no population, that was not what was going to happen. After 2 long weeks of travel he finally made it to a place that looked like a desert. Then he saw a sign ahead of him saying, “ Welcome to the Great American Desert, Elevation 100, population 0.” He couldn't believe his eyes. But he couldn't turn back now he promised his wife he could come home with a company. What was he going to …show more content…
do.
He decided he would keep going until he found a nice place to build a home. He found an open field with a small pond behind it. He thought it looked perfect, so he started building. A few weeks later he had the perfect house for resting and creating his new drink. He got right to work in the morning after a cordial long nap in his new house. Which by the way, he had to make everything inside of it from scratch too! That would be a lot of work. Anyways, he started mixing things together to create the perfect drink powder. He made the best drink. It was a liquid concentrate drink call fruit smack. He thought it was so good he just had to keep it, so he found a way to remove the liquid from the drink. It was a very difficult and long process, but by a year he finally found a way to make it a powder, and have it dissolve in water. He was so excited when he first saw it dissolve he ran outside and yelled “drinks for sale”, but then realized that there was still nobody in the town or even state. He immediately got started on the packaging. He couldn't think of a name, then he walked outside and it was a little frigid. He said to himself “wow it is cool outside, I thought it was supposed to be a desert”. He missed what winter felt like the whole two years he lived there because he would not step outside until he finished. When he found out how cold it was he immediately thought, what this my new name would be. Kool (with a k)!!Once he thought of his new name, he immediately got started on his packaging. He finally finished everything and his new packaging was created. He started make dozens and dozens to pack them up on his wagon. He stacked them up and headed out of town to start selling them.
After miles and miles he finally hit a small town. Perkins set up a small shop on a street corner and started selling. At first he had no one buying his product. I mean when you think about it powdered drinks don't not really sound good. But after a week of just sitting there he was about to give up on this town. Then one small little girl, by the name of Aid Beckham, bought his first Kool packet. She brought it home and tried it out. She was so amazed and delighted she spread it around town how good it was. His business then picked up wildly. He was so grateful for the benevolent little girl, he decided to add to the name and call it Kool-aid. When everyone had stocked up he moved to 15 new different towns! He had questioned if he brought to much packets but now he questioned if he brought enough. When he woke up one morning he realized that he only had 20 more packets left, he felt very irate. He had to take the trip home to make more. When the word had spread around town that the Kool-aid guy had left they didn't really care. But when they all ran out, they realized how satisfactory it actually was. There are so many benefits to a powdered drink. Like, it can store easily and it last longer that an regular drink. So they just had to get more. Perkins didn't see it coming until it actually happened. A bundle of people from each town he went to started to move and build houses and start to build a town. He couldn't believe his eyes. He didn't know how to feel.
Now that there was a whole state waiting for his Kool-aid he had to pick up his company. He started building a factory and getting workers, all his workers were docile. Dozens and hundreds of his packets were sold each day. When more people starting to hear about this they moved to Nebraska, or “The Great American Desert”, And a highly populated state started to build. Now thousands of Kool-aids were sold each day. It seems awesome and incredible, but really it started to become a bad thing. Now that it started to become crowded there was no room for farming. There was no more room to build houses, and the air pollution started to become bad and hazardous. All the state started to have was Kool-aid. No one got sick of it but they needed more of a variety. They tried to make tiny farms but all they could make were tomatos and lettuce. What were they going to do, no one was willing to move.
Perkins was happy with his Kool-aid outcome but he couldn't live like this forever. He had to do something. But he soon realized that there was nothing he could do. No one would move, and surprisingly more people wanted to move in! They forbid incomers but what were they supposed to do about old comers. All Perkins could think of was to stop his Kool-aid business in hope that people would move out. He went 3 months without a business. No one still moved! It was terrible, just imagine no food except maybe salad for every meal and water from the ground. I could never live like that, even for the newest most delicious drink in the world. That now was even being shut down. But then winter came. It got so cold and snowy they couldn't grow anything, they had no food. Everyone that stayed there was going to endure a lot of pain. That's when people started to move, they decided they needed to go to a warmer place in the winter. Almost half of the population still stayed though! Now that is what I call commitment. By the time winter was over he realized that he could pick up the business again.
He happily found a way to deliver the Kool-aid. With the new delivery system nobody would have to move here to get kool-aid. Also, after that disastrous winter no one would want to move back. Once he started the system even more people started to leave! But That was it, people that stayed here we're here for good. There was now more room to grow more foods and raise animals. People started to pick up farming and build grocery stores. More families started to be raised and a school system started up. They tried to grow a whole bunch of different foods. Not many of them worked as a huge success. One person tried corn and it worked incredibly good. More and more people used con in their gardens to feed to the animals and cook for themselves! Corn was the perfect farming food for Nebraska. Which did I tell you got a new nickname, Nebraska was now called the cornhusker state. Things started to pick back up in nebraska and become normal. They had Kool-aid, farming, and charismatic families/people. As you can see it is starting to sound like the Nebraska we know now. That is probably because it is. Without all this history we wouldn’t be where we are now. And Edwin E Perkins actually kinda started it all. That is a sure way to be well known. He definitely got the respect and popularity he
wanted.
