Food deserts are areas of a community where stores or markets, lack fruits, vegetables, and other whole foods. Food deserts in America become a problem when people can’t afford the food due to low income, the traveling distance to stores, and when children become obese due to the lack of nutrition. Food is a daily necessity that everyone needs to get their energy throughout the day. The nutritious food that everyone needs is found in your local grocery stores, but having so many low income communities is a struggle to afford the food. This food desert problem has grown over the years as has many citizens that suffer from the nutrition they lack.
The issue with food deserts is the lives it affects. With so many families on welfare or with little to no income, have shared the struggles of trying to support their children that have nothing to eat but the cheap fast food, …show more content…
With many local stores and markets being more than a mile away, many families cannot afford the travel distance from their homes. If food prices can go up, so can gas. Some places in America serve their gas more than the average price of $2.25, therefore costing a family more than just groceries. The prices of gas are not the only problem, so many other financial problems such as bills for water and power, mortgage, and other expenses.
Food deserts can be dealt with, by volunteering to help serve struggling families at your local food bank. Other ways would be like LA Green Grounds that took the initiative step to helping the hungry. They gather volunteers to help grow gardens for people who need it and in this way serve their family with their own fruits and vegetables. Many service vans in certain areas, go by houses and give bags of food to the ones that can’t afford the trip or the price.. There is also local kitchens where people can work at and make the
