Kriol: English-Based Creole
Background:
Kriol is an English-based Creole spoken in the Katherine region of the Northern Territory and the Kimberly region in Western Australia. Kriol started to develop as a pidgin in the early 20th century in the north-eastern Northern Territory allowing Indigenous Australians to communicate with the English speaking missionaries. The pidgin developed into a creole when the children of Indigenous Australians and English speaking missionaries began learning Kriol as their first language.
