The Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan is a secret organization made up of white Protestant Americans who discriminated against black people, Jewish people and other minority groups. The Ku Klux Klan made society realize that there was still prejudices and racists in America. This group encouraged the government take action to stop discrimination from growing in the South. The Ku Klux Klan is an evil organization but, it made the people and government realize how bad discrimination was occurring.
Members of the KKK are white supremacists, which means they believe whites are superior to all other races. The group was formed in 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee. “The first leader was Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877), a former general in the Confederate Army, who, on April 12, 1864, in the final days of the American Civil War (1861-1865), led a massacre of three hundred African American soldiers in service of the Union Army at Fort Pillow, Tennessee” (“Ku Klux Klan”). Many people today based on their knowledge of the KKK, would say that they are a violent terrorist group. “Today, many sources classify the Klan as a "subversive or terrorist organization"” (“Ku Klux Klan”). The Klan are still trying to commit crimes and violence in America even though they are not as effective as before when they had larger numbers. The crimes the KKK has made lately had little to no effect on the general public. “In April 1997, FBI agents arrested four members of the True Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in Dallas for conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiring to blow up a natural gas processing plant” (Popham).
