It is with great enthusiasm that I am applying for the LEAD Ed.D. Higher Education Administration at the University of Florida. I am truly excited about the opportunity to learn more about higher education, as well as take the next step towards my goal of becoming a senior level college administrator. I am grateful to have had several educational and professional opportunities that have prepared me to contribute to the LEAD program as a doctoral candidate and keep up with the rigors of a graduate program at the University of Florida. I believe that the LEAD program’s curriculum will prepare me to lead not only within my institution, but in my community as well.

Professionally, I would like to join the University of Florida’s LEAD program to continue my goal of being a life-long learner, and gain as much knowledge as I can that will allow me to continue to be effective in my capacity at Valencia College as a Manager of Learning Support. I would also like to continue to strengthen my

This experience exposed me to the hard work and sacrifice that is required while engaging in graduate studies as a working professional. While challenging, I am incredibly grateful for my time in the University of Central Florida’s Higher Education and Policy Studies program. It taught me how to think critically about the issues we face in our field, and provided me with critical competencies needed to work with a number of different cultures, lifestyle, beliefs, and backgrounds in a higher education setting. Classes such as Theories of College Student Development, Ethical & Legal Issues in Higher Education, and Organization & Administration in Higher Education deepened my understanding of our field and what it takes to be catalyst for change as a practitioner on college

College, Jonathan Malesic argues, is not just a time for preparation, but for exploration and expansion. In his publication to the New York Times, Malesic offers a down-to-earth approach to a problem that faces many Americans today: the value of a liberal education and its implications for careers. With his digestible, colloquial language and anecdotal evidence from students, Malesic creates a tone that is as understanding and humble as it is persuasive and resonating for his readers. Malesic does not—true to his intentions—use a prose that is pedantic and scholarly; instead, his conventional, digestible style indicates to his readers open, relaxed, and considerate discussion. To emphasize his perceptivity, Malesic opens with many rhetorical…

I began in the organization as a member and participant in competitive events, I have now worked my way up to being my chapter’s President and the Missouri State First Vice President. Out of all the assumptions about what makes a college a successful college, I believe the value of college is not solely based off of the cost or graduation rate, but it’s value is reflected by the students’ efforts and the life lessons learned. After reading the articles, Why I’m not afraid of Virginia Woolf -- of the, ‘crisis’ in the humanities by Anne E. Fernald, The Crisis in the Humanities and the Corporate Attack on the University by P. Winston Fettner and College is not a commodity. Stop treating it like one by Hunter Rawlings, I began to understand more about other perspectives of college that have broadened my understanding of higher education.…

University of Chicago’s prestige is extraordinary, and its renown expands throughout our entire world. Yet this is not what makes this place so intriguing. From being immersed in one of Earth’s most dynamic cities to its philosophy of intellectual growth and global exploration, UChicago’s value goes far beyond the label as a top tier school. As I attended a UChicago visit to Bishop Watterson, I remember specifically when Mr. Kurfirst, an officer of the admissions department, said “Yes, University of Chicago is very competitive, but not in the way most people think. The students here compete in order to push each other to higher boundaries. We compete, but everyone here is in this together and our students can turn to anyone in our community”. If I want to make a positive difference in this world, no university would be more reliable in encouraging and assisting my endeavors than this institution. With the University of Chicago, political aspirations people called impossible and idealistic suddenly seem…

On behalf of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), researchers at the University of Michigan’s Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education surveyed 23,000 undergraduate students and 9,000 campus professionals (faculty, academic administrators, and student affairs staff) at 23 institutions participating in the Templeton Foundation-supported initiative, Core Commitments: Educating Students for Personal and Social Responsibility. Data from the initial administration of the Personal and Social Responsibility Institutional Inventory (PSRII) in fall 2007 assessed the campus environment along five dimensions of personal and social responsibility: (1) striving for excellence; (2) cultivating personal and academic integrity; (3) contributing to a larger community; (4) taking seriously the perspectives of others; and (5) developing competence in ethical and moral reasoning.…

    1. When I think of what I can contribute to the university to community, I begin to look at what the university is all about. Florida A M University is all about warmth and acceptance. It’s all about driving students from all walks of life to perform to the best of their capabilities. There all about welcoming African American students and encouraging them to pursue greater heights. My only wish is that I will be given a chance to contribute even in the smallest of way, in helping the university keep its reputation and the prestige it deserves. Doing so is not an impossible task for I believe that simply being myself will be a contribution itself. I honestly believe that I am strong enough to face the multiple challenges that will come along the way as I pursue my…

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a novel that was published in 1960, the times where our nation had segregation and injustice amongst the colored and the whites. Racism presents itself in many ways in the town of Maycomb. Some are blatant and open, but others are more insidious. The plot focuses on a lawyer, Atticus Finch, and how he defends a colored man, Tom Robinson, who is wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. When they go to trial Tom is automatically a victim of injustice when they find him guilty of rape just because he is black (Normney 5). om Robinson’s trial, and in fact his entire life, was badly affected by racism. It is truly a testament to the corruption of society when a person who has earned a bad reputation is held in higher esteem than a person who was born with it, as is the case with Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson. Even though Tom was obviously honest in his testament, the jury sided with Bob Ewell because he was white. They made this decision despite the fact that the Ewell family was widely known to be a worthless part of society. Jem, not being racially prejudiced, could not understand this mentality. As Atticus pointed out, “If you (Jem) had been on the jury, son, and eleven other boys like you, Tom would be a free man.” (Lee 7).…

Leonardo DaVinci’s Mona Lisa is one of the most well-known paintings in the world. Show anyone from a 60 year old man to a 10 year old girl a picture of the painting and, most likely, they will be able to name the painting as well as the painter. While some say that DaVinci’s painting is the most famous of all created, many of Andy Warhol’s paintings are also easily recognizable. Almost everyone has seen the Campbell’s Soup Can series Warhol painted or his famous Triple Elvis print. This paper will be focusing on his Marilyn Monroe series, which I will be comparing and contrasting to the Mona Lisa. There are many obvious differences between the two paintings, such as the time period, color scheme, background and subject matter. My goal is to also point out some similarities such as their use of line, recreations, fame, and prominence in society.…

As a student of the UIC's Honor College I believe that I will bring new innovative ideas to my fellow students and to those around me. I not only will aspire to better myself, but to encourage those around me to be the best student they can be. As the youngest sibling I have endured through many challenges. From struggling to explain my opinion about a subject in a way that will back up my reasoning to asserting my role as a leader. Although at times I have felt like giving up, I have prevailed. I learned how to state my opinion in a way that is informative, yet not rude. One challenge that I felt I excelled in exceptionally is being a leader. I have immersed myself in multiple school activates that leadership is a necessity. I am currently the president of the twelfth grade book club and a board member of the Senior Committee. With the skills that I have learned as a result of those positions I will be able to implement them in the classroom and in school events. As a student of UIC’s Honor College I plan to make use of all the advantages given to me. With the benefits provided to me I plan to take advantage of the honor courses that apply to Physical Therapy. I would also like to study abroad if I were given the opportunity to because I believe that you can learn a lot by immersing yourself in different cultures. It would be an honor for me to take part in the Honor College as a tutor because as a student who has had the experience of being both a tutor and a student I know that it can be a rewarding experience.…

Being a first generation college student is something that I take great pride in being. The panelists from yesterday radiated pride and responsibility, in upholding their name as a first generation college student. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them, however, it was hard for me to identify with some of their feelings and attitudes about attending a four-year university. It felt odd for me, as many of my classmates could empathize with how the panelists felt, whereas I, coming from a different background, had trouble pulling from my experiences to understand their previous circumstances.…
