In the case study, Sergeant Williams did not make a sound decision because he knew that officer Tibet engaged in extra-marital affairs since his colleagues often referred to him as a Lady's Man. However, Officer Tibet was the best field officer and that the attractive Officer Robert had a lot of common sense and a "no-nonsense" demeanor to flirtatious male officers. Therefore, the sergeant assumed she was not likely to give in to any inappropriate approaches that Officer Tibet would make towards her. The first mistake made at the beginning was to place Officer Roberts under Officer Tibet's supervision. Secondly, the sergeant did not terminate officer Tibet's supervision of Officer Roberts the moment he suspected that the relationship between them was more than just a simple friendship. First, the management is at fault for asking supervisors to give their subordinates some leeway by exercising less supervision and disciplinary actions, to keep them from taking other jobs in neighboring cities, which often paid higher than the Alstonville Police Department, thanks to the additional firefighting training and certification of Alstonville Police Officers. Secondly, though the sergeant was following managerial instructions, it is every supervisor's job to keep his/ her subordinates in check for the sake of their growth and that of the department (Waters, 2004). Therefore, he is at fault for not taking Officer Robert off Tibet's supervision after suspecting an improper relationship between them. The military named the village of Son My containing My Lai, My Khe, and Co Luy ‘Pinkville’ in reference to the color designated to the region by combat maps. Olson and Roberts immediately point out the emphasis the company’s training had made regarding obeying orders at all costs. Right away they raise the question of whether or not there is a conflict between following the orders of superiors and following one’s conscience. Paul Meadlo, a rifleman in C Company, recalls what he took from his training: “…you’re trained to take orders from the first day you go to that damned service, and you come back and, all right, you want to try some people that had to take orders”.
