Langston Hughes Mother To Son Analysis
My poem will imitate “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes. The context of my re-written poem is gender inequality, whereas Hughes is racial inequality. My Poem explores the hardships women have to face and how they still stay determined. This has led me to my thematic statement of “despite the challenges in life, females need to stay determined and fight for equality in order to achieve their goals”. I have a personal connection to this poem because as a female I have to overcome many challenges and my “gender” is one of them. If I give up I will be unable to achieve my life goals. In my poem, I will use an extended metaphor, repetition and informal language in relation to Hughes work. In Mother to Son, Hughes uses an extended metaphor to
compare life to stairs. Whereas my extended metaphor is comparing life to a roller coaster. A roller coaster is used because in life you go through up, downs and loops. These downs and loops are intensified as a woman, and it purpose is used to emphasize the difficulties and complexity of life. Furthermore, Hughes uses repetition in order to get the idea that the world we live in is unfair, but despite this unfairness we need to keep pushing. I used repetition which can be seen “my life as woman hasn’t been a smooth ride” and the “still riding” to put emphasis on persevering through life’s struggles. Moreover, Hughes uses African American Vulgar to connect with his audience, which shows he has not lost his culture despite it being easier to act white. Similarly, I use informal language through the use of my personal pronouns such “But I stayed on the ride”. In addition, the structure of the poem is similar to Hughes as it is one Stanza, in order to to show the journey of life is continuous, and there are no breaks. You cannot just get off the roller coaster in the middle of the ride, and that is what the one stanza is trying to prove. Additionally, the words “white” “tall” “blond” are all alone to emphasize that the importance society puts on beauty, and shows what society believes is beautiful.
