Although college students have a busy schedule, priorities of the student vary through each student. Some students pay for college themselves and some don’t. Lars Eighner made a general characterization that college students are wasteful. The issue with this characterization is that it doesn’t account
for every single college student. Also Eighner only specifies the waste is food. Typically it would depend on the specific student’s mindset on what is and isn’t wasting and as stated earlier everyone is different.
Lars Eighner although not accounting for every college student makes a valid point with his general yet broad characterization. Some college students are wasteful because their parents or a third party pays for everything they need, some even though they pay for things don’t realize the importance of the things they waste, and lastly some just aren’t wasteful at all.
Lastly Lars Eighner made a broad, general characterization, but the point was valid based on his knowledge as a dumpster diver who “dives” around a college town. One flaw in this statement is that Eighner made his characterization based on his perception of the students from one college by their trash that he rummaged through. Also Eighner made his perception based on the trash from around the time the students were about to go home for winter break which doesn’t account for the rest of the school year they are at school. In order to add credibility to Eighner’s characterization he would need to dumpster dive in more than one college town and he would need to go year round to really assess the wastefulness of the students.
