I went to the Sheriff’s Office in the neighboring county and applied for a corrections job. I was hired only a couple months after applying. I started in the jail on the midnight shift after only one week of training. I worked on midnight shift for about three weeks and was approved to go to day shift. I finished my correctional career on day shift with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office after twenty seven months of employment.

I dealt with suicide, gang issues, and riots by the inmates. While dealing with these issues I had to bounce back quickly to keep the chaos down and finish the shift. Resilience has been defined as an attitude that enables the individual to examine, enhance and utilize the strengths, characteristics and other resources available to him or her. (Harrington, 2012). This is what allowed me to continue and grow as a young police officer.
