Within the workplace there are individuals, groups and teams all of which contribute to a good working environment. A group consists of a number of individuals that are often grouped together due to a common factor such the same project or end outcome. These individuals tend to have regular contact and have frequent interactions with each other. As a group the individuals will work towards a common goal. A team is a group of people who all have specific skills that are all required to complete a set task. All members of a group can operate with a high degree of interdependence whilst sharing authority. A group can develop into a team if there is a co-ordinated effort to reach the common goal where all members understand each other’s individual roles. It is said that a group becomes a team through ‘Tuckman’s stages of group development.’ These stages include forming, storming, norming and performing. A good team consists of many different characteristics. Firstly, a group is made up of individuals who have complementary skills and team roles which are all recognised and completed to a high standard. As researched by Belbin, the clear roles of the members of a team help to prevent conflict and members have absolute certainty who is specifically responsible for what.
