LEADERSHIP LESSON NUMBER 1: Accept criticism with Confidence Someone once told me when everyone accepts and supports what you are doing with no questions or hesitations you are clearly not doing something right. This is my most important leadership lesson. Human beings are made different; we all have different perspectives, ideologies on life and beliefs. It is important to hear what your opponents have to say, accept their criticism with humility and confidence and use it in coming up with better ideas.
I think a leader should be open to criticism, and not take it negatively but as feedback and make room for adjustments. I think a leader should be accountable for their mistakes and let the team tell him/her where he/she went wrong and what could have be done better. I think that’s the way that a leader knows that the team is putting is undivided attention and want the success as much as the leader does. I saw this in all the events we organised as a class in leadership this year, everyone was open to being corrected and they took it in with so much positivity and altogether this made us reach our goals.
LEADERSHIP LESSON NUMBER 2: It’s Okay not to know everything As a leader I think my strongest quality is showing my team that I don’t know everything but I am open to discussion and learning. I think as a leader I learn better through people. For me leadership is not managing, because it is not about organizing, telling and controlling but rather inspiring, collaborating, inclusion, motivating and creating new ideas as a team.
A good example of this is through the debriefing that I have learnt this year in our leadership class.
