There are certain attributes of a leader that are paramount for success. This letter will identify some of those attributes in an effort to shed light on how we can enhance the morale of our unit. When the below qualities are utilized with Soldiers; the potential results are endless. We may find ourselves in an environment that promotes ingenuity and encourages selfless service.
First we must be proficient and open-minded at our job. Soldiers look to us for guidance and as an experienced leader you are identified as the example and standard bearer. You will teach them by displaying our productivity and willingness to operate at the lowest levels. Working alongside your Soldiers indicate there is a particular work ethic that is expected and required when arriving to the unit. Encourage Soldiers to be engaged and allow them to “run with it” by operating on their own. Maintain a level of supervision that permits them to execute your guidance and problem solve if needed.

You will maintain a working leader’s book that consists of personal data, training completed, training needed and promotion status. Section time will not be limited to duty hours. Make contact with your section members during the month and discuss upcoming training. Ask junior Soldiers what they would like to see on the training schedule and guide them on what they need to do for promotions. Make sure Soldier’s know when and where to report to drill. When I was a Training NCO at the 130TH MP Company I would require my team leaders to text me by 1700hrs every Thursday with a Soldier situational report (SITREP).
